Mahara is the right tool for us.
+ Groups (gold fellows/Mentor program) allows members collaborate with cohort
+ Crowd Source Content - members share their learning events with groups/all other members via ePortfolio. Links to events with learner notes on each posting. Events can be searchable. We are using members to mine the internet for relevant content.
+Push down content - learning events (webinars or eLearning we find relevant to the annual theme) can be entered and presented to the users.
+Webinars - size of webinars is large enough to continue using current solution with links from YGLU
+Electronic IDP format - share with mentors, update with ease, may be a selling point for partnership with OPM or other sites
Remote Learner
+ Will help build site to format we define
+ Branded appropriately
+ Teach admin how to effectively manage site
+ Data is ours - should we decide to host on our own server we can transfer
= may cause us to have to update links to YGLU
+ Cost is $7995 for full year of management and "smart start" Annual is $5000 after that.
= may be able to get in kind donation for future years if value add is demonstrated
= Value add to 2U should be able to maintain funding for future
Not using Remote Learner
+ time required to start site is not logical for any volunteer board members
+ limited access to technical support
Finally. I like your vision. You are creating a function that is going to be a valuable product for our members. A portal to the development of positive careers. If the board is adamantly against this course of action then my feeling is that we need to discuss what they want to do with YGL going forward. If they do not have a commitment to creating an educational arm of this social club then perhaps it would be best to "sell" the idea to GovLoop or someone who is willing to foster the concept. I joined this organization to create YGLU, networking is important but it doesn't add the value that I need as a member of the org much less board member.
