Well done Tori
I had both the privilege and pleasure to return to my home Group on Sunday to celebrate Tori Lawson’s amazing achievement of her Queen’s Scout award.

Tori completed everything last year but after so many lockdowns, we were finally able to get together outdoors as a community for the formal presentation.

Like many of our Venturer Scouts, Tori has connections to more than one Group.

I always find it humbling and inspiring to reflect on what our young people are doing and to see their personal development throughout the Scouting journey.

If you are looking for motivation for doing what we do, my advice is to try to get yourself to a peak award celebration and immerse yourself in all that positive energy.

The 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟 Venturer experience
What will Venturers do at VicJam? It’s the first time Venturers have been able to attend a Jamboree as a participant since 1968, so people are working hard to make the Venturer experience very special.
  1. This will be far bigger than any Venture. Which brings benefits. Everything - like arena entertainment - is huge.
  2. Venturers will enjoy adventurous or super-relaxing five-day expeditions.
  3. Venturers will also have Venturer-only time at Jamboree on-site activities.
  4. Venturers won’t cook. They’ll be fed by Catering with service Leaders. Great food, great vibe.
  5. And now we can reveal the latest Venturer-only feature: a 24-hour chill out area where Venturers can grab a toasted sandwich or a drink at 3 am, or chat with mates, or relax with a cold book. An oasis in a busy Jamboree, a home away from home for Venturers only,
But it needs a name! Venturers: what is your 24-hour hangout called? Send suggestions to mark...@vicjam.com.au and we’ll pass them to the relevant Venturer decision-makers.

The creator of the winning suggestion gets their own permanent reserved seat in the Venturer hangout!

More than 350 Venturers have already signed up for VicJam. And you? And your Leaders?

Scouting for those not going to VicJam
Now that we know who is attending VicJam it is time to ensure that for those not going they also still get to enjoy a wonderful year of Scouting.

In most Units it is not unusual for 50% of the Unit to not be attending and it is far too easy to just concentrate on those attending to meet the requirements and not remember there is a wider unit who needs to be considered. So what is your Unit doing to ensure that those not attending remain engaged in the program? There is still an exciting year ahead and plenty of activities to do so let’s ensure that no Scout misses out on an exciting year, VicJam or not, and they are still participating post VicJam in the Scouting Program.

Things to think about:
  • Ensure it is a recurring topic on your Unit Council meetings to ensure that all youth are receiving an exciting program
  • Appoint a PL to look after these specific Scouts and to sit down with them and work with them on their award scheme journey and ensure that they are continuing to progress.
  • Ensure every Scout, attending or not is able to participate in all activities and aspects of Scouting life and they feel like they are like they are valued and welcome.
  • Ensure when you your Unit is doing their program that the ideas and needs from both those attending and not attending are considered to build a strong balanced program for all.
