Hi people,

There might be an LOCs (local organising commitee) meeting at ATREE on 21st June where a few from Delhi and other here at Bangalore will be present to discuss things. Gladwin told me that he will let me know the exact date.

I guess the question for us now is - what can YETI do? Given that no info on the schedule is still in place, we could suggest some ideas to them at the meeting if a few sets of ideas are thrown in and hashed out ahead of time. Since most of you know the regular stuff that these conferences host, some different should be appreciated, I think.

Will get back as and when I get more info. Throw in some ideas in the meantime.

Here are my suggestions:
1. Organise a separate student symposium like they did at the canopy
conference in Bangalore (http://www.canopy2009.org/html/cscape.html)
However, we should discuss if it is a good idea to separate the students
from the rest.

2. Organize a mentorship programme
(http://www.atbc-scbafrica2011.org/grants-awards/mentorship-programs/) -
something we wanted to do at YETI but didnt.

3. Facilitate the formation of small focused discussion groups during the
conference.

4. Organize not-so-serious activities like at YETI - study area map,
graffiti board etc.

i liked the idea no 2 and it might add to the experience of participants and help YETI as well about the feasibility of the event.

and along with the mentorship we could convert it into the small group discussions along with the mentor. in fact mentor meeting itself could be turned into small discussion group.

i am not sure how others will react to the idea of not so serious work but i think we could concentrate on hari's ideas no 2 and 3 and if there still work force and enthusiasm for idea no 4.

Someone should add the volunteers from this YETI (emails on wiki) on this google group, otherwise its funny! Alternatively...take this to the wiki. On a new page for discussion. That way all comments in one place and no series of emails.

Agree with Anagh abt 2&3. 1&2 would be a mini-yeti or too much like yeti....unless thats what we want

Not been thinking hard enough, but few points below....

These guys are planning one anyways, unless we want to suggest otherwise.
Not sure if this is possible - but do we want to try an 'Asking a good question' by an international ecologist?

2. Organize a mentorship programme

- Nice, appropriate! But the ATBC is trying this one too, I believe. Does anyone know how they are doing it? We could try it differently.
- Get a few gutsy Mentors to present cases of 'failure' (or an important non-academic lesson, but important for conservation) in their own professional lives, and lessons learnt for research & policy. Why don't journals appreciate sections of this kind? We could help raise questions. Hari is the best person to talk about it. RG at CES apparently had some things to say about it, right Hari?

3. Facilitate the formation of small focused discussion groups during the

will try and see if I can chip better.

Nice ideas. Perhaps mentors could also talk about 'How to train yourself in research when you don't have a mentor?' No idea how will they go about it :) , but seems kinda useful to many, when opportunities of getting into a 'good' research training institute are limited.

Hi,

The meeting with the other LOC members is on 22nd, Wednesday. If there are a few who are free in the evening do come for it.

Amit

P.S. - a YETI wiki page has been initiated along with the yetigau wiki for the SCB Asia 2012 updates. However, since meetings are going to be attended by folks at Bangalore, the alerts can be over email.

Given that one of YETI's main motivations is to reach out ecology
expertise and resources to people who dont have access to it I was
wondering whether we should focus on this at SCB as well. Maybe we should
think of ways in which to reach SCB to people who are not going to be
present at the venue - videos/audio/transcripts of plenaries, interview
prominent ecologists who attend, get them to write up short pieces for
YETI etc. Maybe we can think of other ways of reaching this out to the
YETI network of students? I think this is a good way of highlighting the
YETI "brand". Other regular activities of the conference we can anyway
help in as individuals. Whatsay?

I completely agree with Hari, what a great idea! Especially since they will be able to give free or discounted entry into the conference for only a limited no of students, it may be useful to have something like that set up.

Dear all,

Sorry I could not follow it up with you guys because am still in the field. As Hari said, we should try reaching out students either formally or informally..

Hari and people who have not visited ATREE:--, I think this is proper invitation for you guys to visit ATREE and have lunch, isnt it? :-)

Regards
Vidya

Hi,

Hari and I met with the LOC members yesterday (22nd June). They are at the starting stage of identifying international committee members and so on. Two points that were substantive for YETI emerged:

1) We expressed YETI's interest for making SCB Asia 2012 a more public appeal (about which Hari wrote earlier), and the idea was received well (lot of heads nodding!)
2) Suhel was keen on the idea that the event ought to have something new to showcase.

The minutes of the meeting will be circulated when we get it from the SCB secretariat.
