On a mission to provide nutritious affordable food while enhancing biodiversity

Hello Friends!

We hope you are enjoying the spring and welcome to our newsletter where you'll find updates from our project and news of what's to come in 2018. We've also included a new section in the newsletter called "Network News" to bring to your attention some interesting projects and people we've collaborated with over the years.

Here's the news!

The Polyculture Study

Next week we'll be welcoming the team for this year's Polyculture Study and having been cooped up all winter we can't wait to get going in the gardens.

It's the 4th year of our polyculture market garden study and this year we're also starting new biomass trials and a perennial polyculture trial looking at yields of mixed species fruits, nuts, herbs and vegetables.   For more information on the our polyculture study see here, we still have some spaces for August and September in case you would like to participate.

You can find the results from previous year's studies in the links below.

The Perennial Polyculture Trial Garden

The main focus of the new trial garden is to experiment with various perennial fruit and nut polycultures alongside nitrogen fixing biomass trees and other herbaceous biomass perennials. We're looking to discover to what degree we can improve the soil with biomass plants and how much biomass these plants can provide for mulching the productive plants in the adjacent beds. We have 3 beds dedicated to the biomass plants and we'll be growing three categories of biomass plants in these beds.

Nitrogen Fixing Trees and Shrubs
Paulownia tomentosa - Robinia pseudoacacia - Alnus cordata - Elaeagnus umbellata
C4 perennial grasses
Miscanthus x giganteus - Aruno donax
Fast growing herbaceous perennials
Symphytum x uplandicum ' Bocking 14'

Planting will be in blocks of 1.5 m wide  x 8 m long as shown in the below image and for each species the weight of the biomass produced, the growth rates and the soil conditions before planting and at regular intervals throughout a 3 year growing period will be recorded.

Results from Biodiversity Survey 2017

Entomological Surveys

Last year we started working with entomologist Chris Kirby-Lambert who carried out three biodiversity surveys in the gardens. The results from the first survey in May 2017 is complete and Chris's report, including sampling methodology and results, can be found here.

This data provides a baseline to work from and using this we hope over the years to assess the impact our methods of food production and landscape design are having on biodiversity, specifically invertebrates. We'll be carrying out a further 3 surveys this year, the first one in late April.

Crowd Funder

To help fund our research and pay for the experts we are bringing in to cover various parts of the study, we have launched a crowdfunding campaign. Thanks to the generosity and support of our donors so far we're pleased to have raised over €2000 that we have put to good use paying for biodiversity surveying work, plants for the trial gardens and soil tests for this seasons trials. We still have a way to go to reach our target to fund the entire 3 year trial and every penny counts. If everyone who visited our blog and website were to donate just €1 we would raise the funds in no time so please share our campaign and if you appreciate our work consider making a donation.
We're offering the following rewards to our donors:
  • €1 - €4 -  We'll send  you a pdf. copy of our Vegetable and Herb Polyculture Designs and you will be credited as a project sponsor on our website and in all of our publications (print and digital). You'll also receive biannual updates from the project.
  • €5 - €49 - We’ll send you a pdf. copy of our “Essential Guide to Growing Fruits and Nuts ”  and all of the above.
  • €50 - €199 - A generous offer from the fine folks of Permaculture Magazine - Get 10 permaculture books, worth £130 for just £25 (+ postage)  and all of the above.
  • €200 - €349  - 25% discount from our courses or events  and 10 % discount for plant and seed orders over €200 (not including postage)  from 2018 - 2019 and all of the above.
  • €350 - €999 - Join the project for a week from July - October and get involved in the day to day running of the project. We’ll provide accommodation to you for 5 days, as much as you can eat from our gardens and a personal tour from the project leaders of the various trial gardens and all of the above.
  • €1000 or more  -  Have one of our research gardens named after you or in a name of your choice. Your chosen name will appear on the entrance of the garden, in all future publications, a dedication in our "Polycultures" book expected to come out in 2020  and all of the above.

The Bionursery

We've had a great year in the bionursery and it's been a pleasure to send out our plants and seeds to more and more gardens across the world and to come into contact with growers of new forest gardens and polyculture farms from all over.

We've stopped delivery for orders now as the plants are starting to break dormancy but we'll be delivering seeds, root cuttings and bulbous plants all year round and will resume plant deliveries in late November - early December of this year.
Subscribers Discount for Fruit and Nut  Cultivars

As a subscriber of our newsletter and follower of our project we'd like to offer you a 15% discount from all of our fruit and nut tree cultivars that can be found listed here. This offer is open from April 15th - September 15th - 2018. Please mention Cultivar Discount when you email us with your order.

If you would like to order plants from our bionursery it's a good idea to order in advance as our stocks are limited. You can find the full list of plants available in the link below.

Gligans Handmade Broadforks

Krasimir from Sofia, Bulgaria, kindly donated us one of his handmade broadforks ideal for raised bed/ no dig cultivation practices. These tools aerate the soil, create better drainage by relieving compaction, are supportive of soil ecology by reducing soil disturbance, avoid bringing weed seeds to the surface and are great for your body - utilizing body weight to get the job done while keeping your back straight.
The tools are made from monolite steel tool with hard-wood handle bar. The foot bar is wide for a comfortable platform for both feet when working heavy soils.
There are two available models:

- 42 cm wide, 5 x 35 cm tines, handle 85/95 cm, weight 5.2 kg.
