Invitation to New Yellowbrick Contributors for the May-August 2019 Summer Semester

To the Yellowbrick Community:

The Yellowbrick summer semester, May-August is starting soon! This semester we’re looking to (finally) release Yellowbrick v1.0. We could use your help if you’re able to commit some time to open source over the summer!

We recently adopted a new governance structure that has been designed from the ground up to specifically consider the effort behind managing an open source project, to minimize fatigue, and to provide opportunities for new contributors with a variety of backgrounds. The new structure divides the year into three discrete semesters of contribution so that we can more easily manage our commitments with the time it takes to contribute to Yellowbrick. At the end of each semester is a release and a handoff to the next group of contributors.

In addition to the new time structure, the governance document also specifies non-overlapping roles for core-contributors in a semester:

- Core-Contributor (5 hours a week): work on a specific set of features for the release.

- Maintainer (10-20 hours a week): handle pull requests, issues, and code reviews.

- Coordinator (5-20 hours a week): project management

Thank you to everyone who replied that they were interested in joining the YB summer semester as contributors! I just wanted to send a quick update to let everyone know that the Advisory Board meeting has been scheduled for May 15. During this meeting, the advisors will determine the roadmap and plan the development of the summer semester to achieve our v1.0 release in August. After the meeting, the semester coordinator will reach out to all contributors and let them know what they will be working on over the summer! If you've volunteered to help out, you can expect an email at the end of next week. We're looking forward to working with you all!
