While we try to limit emails to one monthly newsletter, every once in a while, something comes up at the last minute we'd like y'all to know about. This is one we're especially excited for: ¡Bicimáquinas!

This Thursday, February 6, 6pm–9pm, Friday, February 7, 6pm–9pm, and Sunday, February 9, 11am–5pm, join us at the shop for a Pedal-Powered Machine Workshop. Our new friend Jean-Pierre is riding through our fair city, and would like to leave behind some of the bike machine know-how he's carried with him from points south. We're honored and excited to be hosting him, and hope you can join us!

For the uninitiated, pedal-powered machines are just what they sound like, and run the gamut from blenders to washing machines to wells. While we North Americans generally focus all of our community bike shop efforts on transportation, some shops in Mexico and Central America have become known for a second kind of bike-recycling. The construction of simple machines from bicycle parts can have a huge impact in communities lacking the modern conveniences we take for granted. Pedal-powered machines can drastically reduce the time and effort required for tasks such as washing laundry, degraining corn, and drawing well water. What's even better is that these tools improve the quality of life and work without introducing the harmful side-effects of traditional electric or fossil-fueled mechanization, providing sustainable solutions that are worth a second look from the first world.

Please see (and share!) the attached flyer. Hope to see you there!
