Work on 8-lane expressway to begin in March

January 8th, 2010 jitendra

LUCKNOW: Work on the proposed 170 km long expressway on the right bank of Ganga is likely to begin by March. The expressway, stretching between the Eastern Peripheral Expressway near Ghaziabad to the border of Uttarakhand, would be 8-lane, the state government in a statement said on Thursday.

As per the draft proposal of the UP Expressway Industrial Development Authority (UPEIDA), the work would be carried out only after the consultant submits its feasibility report. An agency, ILFS Infrastructure Limited, has been appointed for the purpose of carrying out a feasibility study in the region. This would also include the alignment of the expressway.

The department would invite request for qualification and thereafter, a request for proposal from the qualifying bidders, after which the project would be executed.

The state government said that the Irrigation department has enough land for construction of the expressway, which would pave way for an easy and comfortable transport from UP to Delhi. The state government is in the process of entering into an agreement with the Uttarakhand government for constructing the road between Purkazi and Haridwar.

The said expressway has been conceptualised by an 11-member committee headed by industrial development commissioner with principal secretaries of various departments like housing, urban development, irrigation, public works department, finance and planning being its members.

Lucknow: The pace of infrastructure development in Uttar Pradesh seems
to have gathered pace with many projects being taken up by the state
government. After setting the ball rolling on Yamuna and Ganga
Expressways, the state government has now prepared a blueprint for yet
another expressway to augment connectivity with its neighbour
Uttarakhand.

Decks have been cleared for the construction of the 170-km-long 8-lane
restricted entry expressway from near Dehra in Ghaziabad to Purkazi in
Uttarakhand. Work on the construction of the Upper Ganga Canal
Expressway, previously known as Hindon Expressway is expected to start
in April after the requests for qualification and proposal are
finalised and a developer selected. The expressway will facilitate
traffic movement and expedite industrial development in the state.

The Uttar Pradesh Expressway Industrial Development Authority (UPEIDA)
and Infrastructure Leasing & Financial Services (IL&FS) and
Infrastructure Development Corporation (IDC), the consultant for the
project signed an agreement for the expressway recently. What is
interesting is that sufficient land for the expressway is already
available with the state irrigation department, so land acquisition
will not be a bottleneck, as has been the case with other
infrastructure projects in the state.

It may be mentioned that the Uttar Pradesh government had, late last
year, changed the route of the proposed eight-lane expressway, by
aligning it with the Upper Ganga Canal instead of the Hindon river, to
sidetrack the problems associated with land acquisition on the
original route. The new route is shorter than the original one, which
was supposed to be 250 km long.
