GREATER NOIDA: The next time you find a car driver taking the law in
his hands, just record the car's movement along with its registration
number and send an MMS to the Greater Noida police. On Saturday,
Greater Noida became the third city after Bangaluru and Hyderbad to
launch a special MMS service for its citizens. "All citizens can
report any traffic violation or crime by just sending us an MMS or an
SMS to the number 9999977100,'' said Assistant SP (Noida) Shailendra
Lal.

According to sources, the initiative was launched to reduce crime and
accidents, especially on both sides of the Greater Noida Expressway.
The police said the initiative will be monitored through a special
control room situated in Surajpur.

"With the Commonwealth Games in mind, we are modernizing the entire
system. We have set up a common database consisting of the owner's
name from the Greater NCR region. All the violators' registration
number will be checked. A challan will be sent out in these addresses
across UP, Delhi and Haryana. We will be sending two reminders to the
owners to pay the challan amount after a gap of every 15 days.
However, if the owners do not turn up even after the specified time,
we will be seizing the vehicles as soon as they enter Noida or Greater
Noida,'' said SSP (Gautambudh Nagar) A K Singh.

Among other things, the citizens can even send still pictures to the
police if they notice that certain anti-social elements have become
active in the area. "These pictures will be stored for future
reference. The SSP office will be monitoring such complaints. We have
also received many complaints from college-going students regarding
eve-teasing. If the girls can click pictures, these cases too would be
handled on a priority basis,'' said a senior police officer.

Concerned over rising fatalities on the expressway, the Noida traffic
police too, have come up with an innovative solution. "We request all
the drivers on the expressway to keep a lookout for vehicles which
have broken down on the eway. Our investigations reveal that a lot of
accidents are taking place due to stranded vehicles. All we want is an
intimation of such damaged vehicles, especially trucks on our
specialized number. We will ensure that the vehicle is removed from
that spot as soon as possible,'' said the officer.

In the next phase, the Greater Noida police hopes to add 34 cameras on
some of the busiest areas of this subcity like Surajpur and Pari
Chowk. "We have provided a camera and a laptop to each police station.
We want the beat officers to videograph any violation of law. We are
in talks with petrol pump owners so that they compulsorily install
CCTV cameras. Investigations also reveal that car snatchers often come
to these petrol pumps after committing the crime to fill petrol before
they proceed towards Meerut. The CCTVs might provide vital
information,'' said ASP Lal.
