Lucknow: Their love story dates back to the 90s. Uttar Pradesh's youngest CM Akhilesh Yadav had just returned after pursuing Masters in environmental engineering from the University of Sydney when he was a 21-year-old beauty from Uttarakhand Dimple Singh mesmerised him with his beauty.
Their whirlwind romance culminated into marriage in 1999 after a brief opposition from Akhilesh's father and Samajwadi Party Chief Mulayam Singh Yadav.
Mulayam had strongly objected to Akhilesh's marriage to a girl of another caste until former SP leader Amar Singh played a mediator.
Akhilesh and Dimple were married on November 24, 1999, in a grand ceremony at Lucknow attended by top politicians, film stars and celebrities like Amitabh Bachchan and Rajesh Khanna. The couple has three children -- 10-year-old daughter Aditi and six-year-old twins Arjun and Tina.
Akhilesh seems to wear his heart on his sleeve when it comes to his winsome wife. He is variously quoted to have declared his love for her and has even said that "shaadi hote hi kismat khul gayi (got lucky as soon as I got married)."
Dimple is a talented painter, voracious reader and love horse riding, according to those who know her well.
The daughter of an Army officer, Dimple grew up in Bhatinda, Pune, Lucknow, Andaman and Nicobar. Her friends say she is quick to adapt to new places, situations and environments.
While studying humanities at Lucknow University in late 1990s, Dimple met Akhilesh who had just returned from Australia after studying marine engineering.
Dimple's three-year electoral journey from Ferozabad to Kannauj has earned her a place in the pages of history as the second person from UP to have won an election to the Lok Sabha unopposed. It was a journey for her husband, too, who could never forget Dimple's loss in the 2009 Lok Sabha bypolls from Ferozabad - a SP stronghold. The loss rankled also because she lost to a former SP leader, actor Raj Babbar. But now having got his wife a historic win from another SP bastion, Kannauj, which he vacated after taking over as the CM, Akhilesh has perhaps fully established his own hold over the party.
In 2009, her husband effortlessly won two Lok Sabha seats -- Kannauj and Ferozabad. He chose to represent the former in Parliament, and she was handpicked to contest the by-election for the latter. Firozabad was said to be unhappy at being dumped by Akhilesh and the Congress muscled in, fielding ex-Samajwadi Party man and actor Raj Babbar against Dimple. The party then made a focused effort to ensure her defeat; even Rahul Gandhi had campaigned for Babbar.
