Introduction of the Great Dharma Hall
The Great Dharma Hall of the World Peace Puja of Gong Ya Monastery is located in Nangqian County of Qinghai province in China. Building the Great Dharma Hall was the manifestation of the late Sangye Tenzin Rinpoche’s immense, compassionate wish to benefit all sentient beings. At that time many years ago, Nangqian County did not have a single monastery or temple in town area, so the late Sangye Tenzin Rinpoche initiated to build one there for the benefit of all the locals. This would give them the chance to participate in pujas near where they stay, participate in retreats observing the Eight Precepts, as well as to circumambulate the sacred site.
Conditions in the whole county and monastery were still very backward then. In order to carry out the compassionate wish of the late Sangye Tenzin Rinpoche, Paljin Rinpoche overcame various obstacles, successfully completing the Great Dharma Hall after eight arduous years.
Since its completion in 2005, besides the scheduled pujas conducted by Gong Ya Monastery, accomplished masters invited by different monasteries and local communities have used the place throughout the year to conduct retreats observing the Eight Precepts, or liberation ceremonies for the deceased, etc. Khenpo also regularly conducts teachings here to impart Dharma to the local population. At the same time, Gong Ya Monastery assigns monastics at its Hall of Dharma Protector to continuously pray for devotees and eliminate their obstacles on a daily basis.
The Great Dharma Hall has a majestic stupa in each of its four corners, surrounded by more than 210 prayer wheels. At its back, there are 13 grand prayer wheels, each consecrated with scriptures of 10 billion six-syllabled mantra, Om Mani Padme Hum. Since the Great Dharma Hall’s completion, it has welcomed daily endless streams of devotees from morning to night, who come to circumambulate its sacred site. Most remarkably, in 2010, His Holiness Achuk Rinpoche of Yachen Monastery lauded the Great Dharma Hall as the scared site for hundreds of peaceful and wrathful yidams, because the aspiration to build it was pristine and unadulterated, anyone who circumambulates it 1550 times will be reborn in a pure land.
Ongoing Reconstruction
In January 2019, the Great Dharma Hall caught fire in the middle of the night while being used by a local community. The walls, murals, Buddhist shrines, religious statues and scriptures were all damaged to varying degrees, but fortunately, no one was hurt in the accident.

Reconstruction of the Great Dharma Hall is presently ongoing. The inner walls, lighting, wiring, etc have been upgraded. The murals are being repainted and the shrines rebuilt. The renovation has been going on for three months now, with more than 20 workers at the peak, or 10-plus workers off-peak, painting or sculpting the interiors.
The exterior of the Great Dharma Hall will be repainted and decorated, while its golden roof will be reconstructed as well. The cement portion that was built many years ago had cracked from long-term exposure to the weather conditions. Hence the plan is to use gold-plated stainless steel to rebuild the golden roof, etc. The prayer wheels along the outside walls where many people frequently circumambulate will also be replaced. The Great Dharma Hall will undergo meticulous and complete renovation both inside and outside. The projected cost for the whole renovation is about S$800,000.

Making A Thousand Padmasambhava Statues
Paljin Rinpoche planned to enshrine 1,000 copper statues of Padmasambhava in the Great Dharma Hall. Padmasambhava is the second Buddha, the embodiment of Amitabha Buddha, Avalokiteshvara Bodhisattva (Guanyin) and Shakyamuni Buddha, in other words, the manifestation of all Buddhas from the past, present and future. In this present age of decline, Padmasambhava offers stronger and swifter protection than other Buddhas or Bodhisattvas due to his long-cherished aspirations and the causes he planted.

Merits from Reconstructing Monasteries and Making Statues
The Commentary on the Abhidharmakosa states that of all forms of worldly good deeds, none is more meritorious than building a dharma hall. To build a dharma hall for the monastics, voluntarily supporting its construction according to one’s means, one accumulates merits equivalent to the merits of all those who would enter the dharma hall in the future to hear, reflect or practise the Dharma, as if one has done so personally.
According to the sutra, “One who contributes a brick or a tile to build a monastery accumulates merits that would last until all bricks and tiles disintegrate into dust.”
The merits from making statues of Padmasambhava are likewise immeasurable. As Padmasambhava said, “In the future, those who have not met me can take my image as the bright light illuminating their darkness. Those who create Padmasambhava’s image and stupa can transform into the three bodies, spreading the Buddha Dharma far and wide.”
Making statues of Padmasambhava is advocated by highly-accomplished monastics such as His Holiness Khenpo Jigme Phuntsok etc, as it helps to make auspicious connections and brings lasting benefits to the Buddha Dharma and all sentient beings.
All Buddhist friends are warmly welcomed to arouse altruism and contribute voluntarily to sponsor the reconstruction of the Great Dharma Hall of the World Peace Puja, and the making of Padmasambhava statues.
Any amount is welcomed for the reconstruction project.
The copper statue of Padmasambhava (29.5 cm in height with gold-plated face will be consecrated with precious items and placed into niches on the inner wall of the Great Dharma Hall):
Each statue is S$320. Donor may inscribe the name of one individual or one family or a deceased loved one. Please provide a Chinese name. The name will be pasted at the back of the statue on the lotus seat.
Closing Date: 30 September (2019)
Respectfully wishing that you experience fulfillment in all your endeavours and joy in the Dharma!
Warmest regards,
Goh Yee Chin
