Cultivate boundless merit by helping to restore

two Retreat Centres at the Sacred Ri Nai Monastery

founded by the First Karmapa, Dusum Khyenpa

Ri Nai monastery, located in Qamdo district in Kham, Tibet, has a long history, dating more than 800 years. It was founded by the First Karmapa, Dusum Khyenpa, at the age of 75. The monastery holds supreme significance in the Karmapa lineage, because it is the site housing the complete relics of the First Karmapa, Dusum Khyenpa. At the same time, some remains from the Second Gyalwa Karmapa, Karma Pakshi are also kept here.

A Brief Introduction

Ri Nai Monastery had been supported by the root guru of the Paljin Rinpoche, the late Sangye Tenzin Rinpoche of Gongya Monastery. Closed connections have been established between two Monasteries since then. Notwithstanding the backward conditions during that time, the old Rinpoche did his utmost to help the monastics and devotees at Ri Nai Monastery, and conducted numerous ceremonies here such as those honouring Vajrakilaya, the Akshobhya and the Zambhalas (Gods of Wealth). Ri Nai Monastery has many devoted practitioners, but with the parinirvana of the elderly spiritual masters in recent years, the monastery lapsed into dire financial straits. In 2006, Paljin Rinpoche found out about the predicament at Ri Nai Monastery. Following the old Rinpoche’s steps and carrying on the old Rinpoche’s vast compassionate aspiration, he started annual sponsorship of the young novices’ living and education expenses. Furthermore, he undertook to reconstruct the temple halls and groom promising monastics, so as to extensively support the long-term development of Ri Nai Monastery as a protector and propagator of the Buddha-Dharma.

The Retreat Centre in urgent need of repair

The Retreat Centre at Ri Nai Monastery has always been the place for the lamas to undertake their traditional three-year retreat and cultivate the Six Yogas of Naropa. However, access to the Retreat Centre had to be closed three years ago when the severely-damaged antiquated wooden structures were deemed unsafe for use. When Paljin Rinpoche learned this, he personally inspected the sites a few times and vowed to help in the reconstruction of the Retreat Centre, so that the traditional retreat practice may be re-established at the earliest possible date.

To build the other retreat centre where the Fourth Tai Situ Rinpoche undertook his retreat

At the same time, on this sacred mountain’s site of Vajravārāhī was the cave where the Fourth Tai Situ Rinpoche undertook his retreat for 13 years. Historically, many eminent gurus had spent their retreat here. However, due to its state of disrepair, it had been abandoned for the past seven to eight years. The Ri Nai monastics discussed with Paljin Rinpoche and expressed their wish for a retreat centre to be built here.

Logs etc. for the rebuilding of the Retreat Centres have been readied

Presently, preparations for the reconstruction of the two retreat places are underway. The construction materials and logs have basically been assembled and ready to start work. The plan is to complete the construction within this year, so that those lamas waiting to undertake their retreat may do so at the beginning of next year, re-establishing the retreat tradition. The estimated cost for the reconstruction is RMB 1 million (SGD 200 thousand).

Those with the opportunity to participate in the reconstruction of the two Retreat Centres at holy Ri Nai Monastery will help to preserve a sacred Buddhist site, and simultaneously accumulate great merit. We welcome any donation according to your own wish, so that collectively we may enable the early re-establishment of this holy monastic training ground.

May the Buddha-Dharma prevail for long!

May all beings be well and happy!

May all attain Bodhi expeditiously!

The closing date for the collection of contribution is 30 June.

Tashi Delek!

Appendix: The Significance of Ri Nai Monastery

Ri Nai Monastery is situated on the holy mountain of Chakrasamvara, a picturesque area with lush evergreen trees. More significantly, it is the sacred site where many accomplished gurus, including the First Karmapa, Dusum Khyenpa and Tai Situ Rinpoche etc., left their holy imprints.

Bird’s eye view of Ri Nai Monastery

Stupa of the First Karmapa, Dusum Khyenpa

Before his parinirvana at Tsurphu Monastery, the First Karmapa, Dusum Khyenpa predicted that his relics would be housed on a mountain shaped like a meeting point where the garuda met the lion, with the footprint of Vajravārāhī. After he passed on, his devotees followed his prediction to find such a place. During their search, his ashes were placed atop a mule’s back. When they reached the foot of the Chakrasamvara mountain, the mule stopped and refused to budge. They had no choice but to set up tent there for the night, and planned to continue their search the next day. In the morning, they had a rude shock as the shoes of the First Karmapa, which had been kept in the baggage, had gone missing. Instead, a line of paw prints seemingly left by a Tibetan fox led up the mountain. The people followed the paw prints up to the middle of the mountain, where the prints disappeared. Instead, they saw the creature cuddled up asleep on a rock, using the First Karmapa’s shoes as its pillow. They were angry at this creature for stealing the First Karmapa’s shoes and grabbed its hind legs because they wanted to throw it down to the ground. Suddenly, the creature shouted, “Karmapa Dusum Khyenpa, please verify and confirm!”  As it cried out aloud, its body disappeared into the rock. The people duly found the footprint of Vajravārāhī near the shoes of the First Karmapa, so they placed the relics of the First Karmapa here, and erected a stupa in honour of the First Karmapa at this location.

The stupa of the First Karmapa also housed the head gear of Tilopa; the bone relics of Naropa; the teeth relics of Marpa; the meditation belt of Milarepa; the medicine bag of Gampopa; as well as the seven śarīra from the cremated remains of the First Karmapa’s spine, the image of the four-armed Chenrezig that appeared from his finger bones during cremation, and his alms bowl and shoes.

During the Cultural Revolution, three villagers tried to destroy the stupa as they thought it was superstitious. In the midst of their attempt, one of them was suddenly and mysteriously struck dead. Witnessing this, the other two were petrified and ran away in terror, leaving the stupa intact. One of the lamas from the monastery then secretly took the container with all the sacred relics and other holy objects to hide in the forest. After the Cultural Revolution, the old Rinpoche Sangye Tenzin came here. That same pious lama then retrieved all the well-maintained sacred relics and the old Rinpoche reinstated them here and rebuilt the stupa of the First Karmapa that we see today. To the left of the stupa is the stupa belonging to the Second Karmapa, Karma Pakshi and to its right are the stupas of Sharmapa the First Dokten Drakpa Senge and Mahasiddha Nyakre Sewo, one of the four heart disciples of Phakmo Drupa Dorje Gyalpo.

The Holy Place of Retreat for Tai Situ Rinpoche

On this holy mountain with the footprint of Vajravārāhī, there is a cave where the Fourth Tai Situpa stayed in retreat for 13 years.  When the Tai Situ Rinpoche came out of his retreat, he left a trail of footprints on the rock, which is visible till today. Not far from here, there is a visible trace of the torma dish which Tai Situ Rinpoche offered during his practice.

Holy sites around the mountain

Circumambulating the holy mountain, one will come across the holy site of the Meditating Arhat, one of the 18 arhats; and the rock that self-manifested “Om Ah Hung”.  Circumambulating one round is equivalent to chanting the heart mantra of Chenrezig 10 million times. It is said that Padmasambhava used his robe to pave a mountain path and to cast aside some huge rocks, which now lay by the side of the path. Along the path, one can see the footprints of Padmasambhava, Rechung Dorje Drakpa and Hayagrīva; the rock with Milarepa’s self-manifested image in an ox horn; the images of a self-manifested four-armed Chenrezig, Padmasambhava and Yeshe Tsogyal; and other holy relics.

Ri Nai Monastery is a sacred site full of blessings, with a long history of numerous accomplished gurus and their sanctified marks. For the sake of propagating the Buddha-Dharma, to groom more practitioners, we earnestly invite you to work with us by contributing to the reconstruction of this holy ancient site. We sincerely invite you to visit Ri Nai Monastery one day and undertake a pilgrimage to the First Karmapa’s stupa, to follow the footsteps of the enlightened masters to embark on a spiritual cultivation journey for the ultimate happiness of all beings.

https://dharmasingapore.files.wordpress.com/2017/06/image1.png

https://dharmasingapore.files.wordpress.com/2017/06/image4.jpeg

https://dharmasingapore.files.wordpress.com/2017/06/image7.png
