Grand Prayer Puja for World peace 2015

The Grand Prayer Puja for World Peace was initiated by the late Sangye Tenzin Rinpoche in Year 2001. It has since been successfully held annually at Nangchen, Qinghai, China (Except for Year 2008). Each year, the Grand Prayer Puja for World Peace attracts Sangha members from all over to gather together praying for World Peace and Well-being. Last year, the 14th Grand Prayer Puja was attended by 6000 over Sangha members and 100,000 over devotees.

By making an offering to the Sangha members, gathered for such an auspicious event, will help one to generate limitless merits and create good connections with Dharma. Such an act is praised in the sutras as a way to generate limitless merits: The act of offering a sip of water to a Sangha member will enable one to receive more merits than all the water in the oceans.

In 2015, the statues of Four-armed Chenrezig were offered to all the attending Sangha members.

The Grand Prayer Puja for World Peace will be held during 19-26 November 2016. This year, Palchen (Ba Jin) Rinpoche made the aspiration to make 10,000 Mani Prayer Wheel (height 20cm) and to offer it to all the attending Sangha members. According to the sutras, the merit of spinning a prayer wheel is the greatest. Any sentient being who merely see, smell or touch it can directly or indirectly attain liberation. The merits accumulated from making Prayer Wheel are vast and tremendous, the negative karma created from many lifetimes will be eradicated, and the meritorious seed will be planted towards obtaining the fruit of enlightenment. Furthermore, with the Prayer Wheel as an object of reverence and offerings, whenever Sangha members turn the Prayer Wheel, the merit will continuously increase thus the donors to make the Prayer Wheel can skillfully accumulate vast merits. Palchen (Ba Jin) Rinpoche from Gongya Monastery is the organizer of the Grand Prayer Puja for World Peace. With his pure aspiration and collective effort, Statues of Four-armed Chenrezig, White Tara, Guru Rinpoche Padmasambhava, Buddha Shakyamuni, Yellow Ritual Robes, Red Sangha Robes and Dharma texts have successfully been offered to the Sangha members during the previous Grand Prayer Pujas.

During this year’s Puja, similar to the previous years, offerings of meals to Sangha members, lamp offering, obstacle-clearing puja and puja for the deceased will be made. Those who would like to rejoice at this grand Puja with a pure intention, may make offerings, dedicating to those family and friends you wish for obstacles to be cleared or for good rebirth of those who have passed away.

General Donation to support the Event – Any amount

Food Offering - $15 per set (for seven days).

The Great Merits of Spinning Prayer Wheels

(extracted from Khenpo Sodargye’s teachings on Mani Prayer Wheel)

The vast and inconceivable merit of spinning prayer wheels is recorded in the Mahayana Canon. Any sentient being who merely see, smell or touch a prayer wheel can directly or indirectly attain liberation. According to the sutras, the merit of spinning a prayer wheel is the greatest among the worldly virtuous deeds of speech and body.

Guru Rinpoche once said: "In all the Buddhist teachings from India that are being translated into Tibetan, no merit accumulated through virtuous deeds of speech and body is greater than spinning the six syllable mantra prayer wheel. Not only do we accumulate vast merit for ourselves through the spinning of the prayer wheel, any sentient being who is karmically connected to us can also be led to the Buddha’s Pureland directly or indirectly."

Anyone who spins the prayer wheel regularly can accomplish all one’s undertakings, quell hatred, greed and delusion in one’s mindstream, eliminate disasters in the world, eradicate diseases of the wind, bile and saliva, and avoid facing earthquake, flood, fire and typhoon. The person will also avoid the suffering of an untimely death.

The one who spins a prayer wheel in his or her hand can also increase bodhicitta, loving-kindness and obtain the realisation of the generation and completion stages to attain illuminating wisdom. The bodhicitta mind of great compassion will naturally arise, and one’s reputation, wealth, longevity etc will be accomplished.  No matter what kind of main practice the person does, if he can practise it after spinning the prayer wheel, due to the blessings of all Buddhas and bodhisattvas, be it the Yidam, Dharma Protector, Dakini or meditation practice will all be successful.

The merit of spinning a Prayer wheel is  inconceivable, especially during the time of death. If one can have a prayer wheel at one’s death bed, one will not need to have Phowa done. If the deceased doesn’t have sufficient time to perform a liberation prayer, or doesn’t have someone who can do this prayer on his behalf; or if the deceased is a non-Buddhist, just place a prayer wheel near his head and he will not fall into the lower realms.

The merit of reciting one 6-Syllable mantra is inconceivable, so is spinning such a prayer wheel once. What more to spin it numerous times? The sages of the past said: “If there are 10,000 six-syllable mantras in the prayer wheel, spinning it once will equate to the merit of  having recited the mantra for 10,000 times.” It is also stated in the sutras: “ All worlds are pervaded by the seven precious gems. The merit of making such offering can be measured; but the merit of spinning a prayer wheel once out of a mind of great aspiration is immeasurable.”

Guru Rinpoche exclaimed: “A virtuous man or woman who aspires to be born in the Buddha’s Pureland should diligently spin the prayer wheel. If he or she can do that, even the heavy negative karma created due to the five heinous crimes will be purified."  Chagme Rinpoche also said: “As long as the person who committed the five heinous crimes and eight downfalls, or who committed sexual misconduct, killing and other heavy negative karma, spins a prayer wheel, all negative karma created will not be able to contaminate his mindstream and he will eventually obtain unsurpassed, complete liberation.”

When the wind passes through a prayer wheel spun by someone on a mountain, and then comes into contact with other living beings, those beings will not fall into the lower realms. If others sees one spinning a prayer wheel, those people will have planted the causes of liberation through sight, and will directly or indirectly attain complete enlightenment. If one spins the prayer wheel while walking, then any being who passes by that path will have planted roots of virtue. Similarly if one spins the wheel while crossing rivers or bridges, all beings in the water will be liberated.

As a Buddhist, one should use the prayer wheel.  It is best to share with others the benefits of spinning a prayer wheel, and of doing virtuous deeds to establish good karmic affinity with them. Sharing in this way will not only help the other person greatly in this life, but also in all future lives due to the immeasurable merit created.

The Great Terton Master Pema Lingpa once said: “Anyone who possesses bodhicitta and wisdom, and produces the heart mantra of Lord Chenrezig in a prayer wheel, and who, after consecration, spins it by hand or through the forces of wind and water will put an end to rebirth in cyclic existence. He will also be successful and accomplished due to the inconceivable merit.” Therefore, one should carry out this virtuous practice day and night; spinning the prayer wheel is the best practice amongst all virtuous deeds.

One can do this practice at all times. Chagme Rinpoche mentioned that this virtuous practice is simple and accomplishing any great matter can be easily and effortlessly achieved by one. From a worldly perspective, spinning a prayer wheel can allow one to obtain fame, wealth and power. Many such instances have been recorded.

Spinning the prayer wheel is a mark of Mahayana Buddhism. Uttered Chagme Rinpoche: “ The one who spins a prayer wheel will not be reborn in a family of wrong views; or a family with a blind, deaf, mute or lame member; or a family in poverty, or a family that engages in the livelihood of animal butchery or fishmongering. In all lifetimes, that person will be reborn in a virtuous and noble Buddhist family."

Palchen (Ba Jin) Rinpoche

Palchen (Ba Jin) Rinpoche was recognized by H.E. Tai Situ Rinpoche and the late Sangye Tenzin Rinpoche. Sangye Tenzin Rinpoche had this disciple close at his heart and gave him many empowerments, oral transmissions and precious teachings. He received the Bodhisattva Vow from H.E. Tai Situ Rinpoche. He also received the Tantrayana teachings from Adhi Rinpoche and other great teachers. Palchen (Ba Jin) Rinpoche went into a three year retreat to meditate on the Six Yogas of Naropa. He has also achieved a high deep understanding of Mahamudra after receiving pointing out instruction from Jamgon Kongtrul Rinpoche.

Sangye Tenzin Rinpoche prophesized that Palchen (Ba Jin) will be his representative and that he will bring tremendous benefit for Dharma teachings. One day when Sangye Tenzin Rinpoche, in his aspiration to locate the reincarnation of his teacher, Sonam Zangpo Rinpoche, asked Jamgon Tai Situ Rinpoche about the whereabouts of his reincarnation. Tai Situ Rinpoche answered that the reincarnation of Sonam Zangpo Rinpoche is none other than his close disciple, Palchen (Ba Jin), who will be able to benefit Buddha Dharma greatly.

Following the words of his teachers close to his heart, with the support of overseas and local devotees, Rinpoche has led the Sanghas of Gongya Monastery to organize the Grand Prayer Puja for World Peace successfully every year. Fulfilling his teacher’s wishes, Rinpoche has completed the construction of the Prayer Hall for the World Peace, rebuilt the retreat centre which has been destroyed by a landslide, established the shrine hall of Dzogchen nunnery, successfully completed the construction of the Guru Rinpoche’s Palace, continued building of the Buddhist Institute and rebuilding the Yang Ling Nunnery. Rinpoche has painstakingly set up a charitable school for the orphans and the children in poverty in 2002. Ten over years since it was set up, the study and living conditions for the children have been improved greatly; currently 150 over students live and study there. Upon the requests of his overseas students, Palchen (Ba Jin) Rinpoche occasionally goes to Southeast Asia to spread the Buddha Dharma and bring benefit to whoever is connected.

Gongya Monastery

Gongya Monastery is located at a very auspicious location in Nangchen County, Qinghai, China between two holy mountains. The great terton, the 1st Chokgyur Lingpa said that the land is the mandala of Lord Avalokiteshvara and the holy land of the Vajravarahi. One day, when he was travelling past the Monastery, he saw Lord Shakyamuni Buddha appearing above the monastery surrounded with a thousand Buddhas and many Bodhisattvas, emanating boundless light. In the space above the monastery, he had the vision of the Buddha activities of all the reincarnations of His Holiness Karmapa, including His Holiness the 17th Karmapa and Tai Situ Rinpoche’s minds are connected.

Gongya Monastery has been one of the ten main monasteries in the area. It is a Karma Kagyu Monastery, upholding both Kagyu and Nyingma traditions.  The present Gongya Monastery has several buildings including the Prayer Hall for the World Peace, The old Shrine Hall, a Buddhist Institute, Guru Rinpoche’s Palace, three retreat centres, two nunneries and a charitable school. The monastery has nine teachers including the reincarnation of the late Sangye Tenzin Rinpoche, Palchen (Ba Jin) Rinpoche, Benpa rinpoche, Pema Rinpoche, as well as 300 over lamas, 200 over nuns and 100 over young lamas.
