I. In The News: Obama's
Budget and Healthcare Plan
by Martin Crustinger
"Pledging a 'new era' of responsibility, President Obama
unveiled a multri-trillion dollar spending plan Thursday that would
boost taxes on the wealthy, curtail Medicare, lay the groundwork for
universal healthcare and leave a string of deficits dwarfing any in the
nation's history"
For the full story check out the Huffington
Post site.
Discussion Questions:
1. What does Obama's plan for affordable healthcare mean
for HR 676, a bill that would provide singlepayer universal healthcare?
2. How do you feel about Obama's plans (cuts in military
spending, increasing taxes on the wealthy, etc) to finance parts of his
proposed budget?
3. What dso you think the response from Republicans is
going to be? How can we work to ensure that the Republicans don't
derail Obama's budget?
II. Mass Action: Don't
Let Lobbyists Derail Obama's Healthcare Plan
Next week, Congress will gather for President Obama's
healthcare summit to make plans for the year-- they need to hear from
real people who want health care reform in 2009! MoveOn.org is
gathering at least 200,000 petition signatures and comments to deliver
right before the summit to make sure Obama hears that we don't want the
lobbyists to delay healthcare reform any longer.

The Uptown (NYC) club has been organizing and mobilizing
youth and students aroudn the economic crisis. They have been hosting
"Recession Special" open-mics giving people a space to voice their
frustrations about the crisis and ways to organize in their
