I. In The News: Military Coup in Honduras

On Sunday, June 28th, 2009 a coup took place in Honduras by the Honduran Military, lead by SOA graduate Romeo Vasquez. Shortly after the reported death of left candidate Cesar Ham, President Zelaya was abducted and exiled. Read the People's Weekly World article to learn more about what is going on in honduras. You can also check ou the Communist Party Statement about the coup in Honduras.

Discussion Questions:

1. If President Zelaya is identified as "center of right" politically, why was there a military coup performed against him and his administration?

2. Prior to his exile, President Zelaya was working to pass a referendum to change the Honduran consitiution allowing presidents to be elected to more than one term. How would this change in the Honduran constitution alter the ability for Honduran citizens to participate in a more democratic system?

3. The leader of the coup, Romeo Vasquez was trained at the School of Americas. What does this say about the United States role in the coup?

II. Mass Action: In Solidarity with the Honduran People

The Latin America Solidarity Coalition calls for:

"Call the State Department and the White House and ask for actions, not merely words, including:

1. A cut off of all US aid (as required by US law) until Zelaya is safely returned to office.

2. Financial sanctions against the coup plotters.

3. An invenstigation into what signals U.S. Ambassador to Honduras Hugo Llorens gave to coup plotters before the coup.

White House Comments: 202-456-1111"
