II. In The News: As U.S. Weighs Taliban Negotiations, Afghans Are Already Talking

by Carlotta Gall

Even as President Obama floated the idea of negotiating with moderate elements of the Taliban, Afghan and foreign officials here said that preliminary discussions with the Taliban leadership were already under way and could be developed into more formal talks with the support of the United States.

Discussion Questions:

1. Do you think Obama should have talks and negotiate with the Taliban? Should he only talk with the moderate elements or with every faction in the Taliban including extremists?

2. Do you think elements of the Taliban should be allowed to hold governmental positions?

3. Do you think there are diplomatic solutions to the war in Afghanistan? If so, do they have to include negotiations with the Taliban?

4. Those who are against talking with the Taliban say that if Obama holds negotiations with them he will be legitimizing terrorism. Do you think that is true?

III. Tell Your Representative and Senators to Sign onto the Employee Free Choice Act (EFCA)

This week the Employee Free Choice Act (EFCA) was introduced into the House and Senate. This bill will make it easier for workers to join a union and create stiffer penalties for corporations who engage in anti-union activities. This bill is essential to helping rebuild our country and getting us out of the current economic crisis.

Corporate lobbyists and the right wing are pouring millions of dollars to fight this bill. Your Representative and Senators need to hear the voices of the millions of working people who are demanding the right to join a union. Sign this petition and tell your Representative and Senators to support the Employee Free Choice Act (EFCA).

IV. DC YCL Fightings for Immigrant Rights

The DC YCL Club has been active in the immigrant rights struggles at the University of Maryland (UMD) and in the surrounding areas of DC. Over the weekend in Virgina, the club attended a 400 person rally outside a 1,040 bed capacity detention center for undocumented immigrants awaiting deportation. The dentention center would cost $64 per day per detainee given to the Immigration Centers of America (ICA), money that could be spent on funding education, healthcare and other needs of working people.
