I. In the News: Biden vows break
with Bush era foreign policy
by Noah Barkin and Ross Colvin
"Vice President Joe Biden promised a sharp break from
the go-it-alone policies of the Bush era in a major speech on Saturday,
saying it was time to "reset" Washington's ties with Russia and Iran."
For the full article, visit the Reuter's
website and for the full text of the speech you can

DISCUSSION QUESTIONS
1. What kind of diplomatic initiatives could the Obama
Administration take towards Iran? Should the Obama Administration have
any demands or requirements for continued dialogue with Iran?
2. In Biden's speech he talks about the need to find a
"just Two State Solution" for the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. How do
you think the recent crisis in Gaza and the gains of far right wing
parties in the recent Israeli elections will impact the Obama
Administration's work towards a just peace?
3. Biden says he wants to "work for a stable
Afghanistan" and that "no strategy for Afghanistan in my humble opinion
can succeed without Pakistan." What should be the peace movement's
response to proposals for troop increases in Afghanistan? What kinds of
diplomatic solutions can the Obama Administration pursue to work for
peace in Afghanistan and end the fighting along the border of
Afghanistan and Pakistan?
II. Mass Action: Tell Congress to
support lifting travel restrictions to Cuba
H.R. 874,
Freedom to travel to Cuba Act, was introduced this week by
Representative William Delahunt (D-MA) and was co-sponsored by four
Democrats and four Republicans. The bill will make it illegal for the
President to create restrictions on travel to Cuba from the U.S. and
end all current travel restrictions to Cuba for U.S. citizens and legal
residents.
Email
your Representative and ask them to co-sponsor this bill.
