II. In the News: Court
Issues Warrant for Arrest of Sudan's President
by Marlise Simons
Judges at the International Criminal Court (ICC) ordered
the arrest on Wednesday of President Omar Hassan al-Bashir of Sudan,
charging him with war crimes against humanity for a concerted
government campaign against civilians in the Darfur region. They did
not charge him with genocide, denying the request by the prosecutor.

DISCUSSION QUESTIONS:
1. Do you think the issuing of an arrrest warrant for a
sitting head of state is an infringement on national sovereignty?
2. Currently the United States is not part of the ICC
because the Bush Administration did not want any U.S. officials to be
tried in the court. Do you think the U.S. should be part of the ICC?
How would you feel if current or former U.S. politicians were issued
arrest warrants by the ICC?
3. Do you agree with having something like the ICC? If
not, how should we hold people accountable to international law when it
comes to crimes such as genocide and mass murder?
4. In response to the warrant, the government of Sudan
has cut off the ability of international aid groups such as Oxfam and
Doctors Without Borders to function inside Sudan. How do you think this
will impact the people of Sudan and in particular those in the Darfur
region?
III. Call Congress to
Sign Letter Rejecting U.S. Intervention in Salvadoran Elections
U.S. Representatives Raul Grijalva (D-AZ) and Marcy
Kaptur (D-OH) are circulating a "Dear Colleague" letter to encourage
other Representatives to sign on to a letter to President Barack Obama
calling for the U.S. government to remain neutral in El Salvador's
March 15th presidential race, respect the election results, and work
toward a positive relationship with whichever party is elected. With
less than a month remaining before election day, this urgent letter is
now open to all Members of Congress to sign.

IV. Tabling for YCL and
CP in LA
Big-ups to the Los Angeles club who tabled the 75th
Annual Youth Convention sponsored by the Junior State of America
Organization. At this convention, high school students across the West
Coast were brought together over the course of a weekend to participate
in activities examining the political landscape. Club leader, Gabriella
Castillo reports, "Within the first ten minutes of setting our table,
we were immediately bombarded by a group of youth asking questions
about what communism was and by sharing a curiosity for what the YCL
does as a whole.. this reassured me that there are and have always been
youth who think like us and are working to bring all of us together for
a strong unity of consciousness and action for change." The LA Club
invited people to attend their book club, and even extended the option
of calling in to the book club as a way to make sure that even those
who lived too far away were included. Gabriela also said that she "...
was glad that as a YCL member I could let my peers know that we are
here and ready to create a connection with them." If you are interested
in getting connected up with the LA club or want to attend their book
club, email gckas...@gmail.com
