I. Summer Internships
with Organizing for America
During the 2008 election, students and young people
across the country were inspired to engage in politics as they never
had before -- and their efforts were crucial every step of the way.
But the work is far from over.
That's where you come in-- Organizing for America is now
accepting applications for eight-week organizing fellowships for this
summer. Summer Organizers will work directly with communities and
volunteer leaders to make the change we fought for in 2008 a reality in
2009.
Fill out the application
by May 5th.
II. In the News: Obama
Open to Inquiry in Interrogation Abuses
by Sheryl Gay Stolberg, Peter Baker and Scott Shane
President Obama on Tuesday left the door to creating a
bipartisan commission that would investigate the Bush administration's
use of harsh interrogation techniques on terrorism suspects, and he did
not rule out taking action against the lawyers who fashioned the legal
guidelines for the interrogations.

DISCUSSION QUESTIONS:
1. Do you think that using techniques like repeated use
of waterboarding, severe sleep deprivation, being confined in small
boxes and being put in stress positions is considered torture? Are
these justifed being used on terrorism suspects who might have vital
information?
2. Do you think those who carried out these acts,
following the advice and consent of the Bush Administration, should be
prosecuted for torture? Do you think the lawyers who put together the
legal guidelines should be prosecuted for torture?
3. How far do you think the trials would go? Would Bush
be able to be prosecuted for sanctioing torture? What would the
movement for change gain from prosecuting people for what happened
during the Bush Administration?
III. Call Congress for a
New Direction on Education
Today young people across the country are making their
voices heard by calling on Congress to move quickly to pass a budget
that is good for students and working famillies. We need a new
direction for America and the federal budget proposed by President
Obama makes some of his firmest commitments leading us there!
Call your Congressperson now at 888-299-1447. You can
use the script provided by the
United States Student Association (USSA).
