Obviously in the "icon" part we will put the address corresponding to the file's icon so that it appears in our application launcher. In my case I saved it in the address / usr / share / pixmaps, but you can even put it in the same directory as the .desktop.
It is not possible to do it with Firefox since Netflix works only with Chrome at the moment. Netflix has implemented it only in said browser (and for obvious reasons it does work in Chromium). If there is a way in Firefox, it would be to put HTML5 support and put a user agent by default, or that is, it starts as webapp but with the Chrome user agent. I suppose that might work this way, but I haven't researched how to do it.
Great contribution .. thank you very much .. using it .. just change the executable for .. google-chrome-beta .. because I use the beta and not the stable .. the icon gave me a problem .. but then I solve that ..
I installed Netflix site as an app because for some reasons it runs better than its native app and everything work out for a while but after a few months or sometimes weeks Edge Chromium's URL bar randomly appear inside the app which is very frustration because it prevents the player from going into full screen mode while watching movies or TV Show and also it doesn't look good either. Also Worth noting that it doesn't appear all the time, It's only appeared once I'm searching or watching the show. I usually fix this by uninstall the apps and reinstall them back and it'd usually be working. But in heavy case I have to completely uninstall edge itself and reinstall it back just to fix one minor problem and after a few months, the problem is coming back again. It's a very weird behavior I try searching for solution but no one seems to have the problem except me.
Hi there, you are welcome to the Microsoft Edge Insider Hub!
The bar you are talking about is not the address bar but is a bar that appears when you are on a different website from the website that you have installed as an app, that bar shows the name of the different website you are in.
I would recommend you to visit this conversation where I have given a solution to this problem which also appears on Amazon Prime Video with more details.
This has to do with the scope of the PWA. You'll notice that when you clicked to install the PWA you were probably on a screen like netflix.com/browse. But when you are in the PWA and click to watch a video, that redirects to netflix.com/watch, which is technically 'out of scope' for the PWA and causes that black bar across the top to show up.
The easiest workaround should be to simply log out of netflix in the browser so the URL is back to just the netflix.com url and install from there. That way the scope is the entire domain rather than just /browse.
@Hrcorl thank you for that new wrinkle on the scenario. I wasn't aware that you could not navigate to just netflix.com, but are always redirected to /uk. If that is true even though you are not logged in, then that definitely increases the priority of this issue.
Thanks @Hrcorl for the help your method works as I also got the same scenario as you also thank to @TheShaunSaw for the explanation now I know how this whole thing works. Maybe in the future we can have the ability to install app by manually typing the URL address in, instead of limited to on site visit.
@outtamahway I was going to suggest a VPN solution, but I don't want to suggest that all of our customers have to do that :-). I'm glad you were willing to and that it worked for you; we are brainstorming different ways to solve this problem so that all of our users stay safe, know what domain they are on, and are able to enjoy sites like Netflix as "apps".
@johnjansen This could be a workaround on some sites but some other sites like deezer is having /us as their default homepage so even after using the vpn, it won't prevent the site from redirect to /us and like @Hrcorl suggested each and every other instance of url is not built upon /us which make the bar appears everywhere because of the missing /us part of the url. But as long as Netflix works, I'd say I'm satisfy now but I hope to see more better and permanent solution in the future :)
This is relatively recent, been using Netflix as an edge app for a while now and this only started happening with the May 2020 update(?). Installing a VPN really isn't a solution for this, hopefully this can be resolved.
I agree with others though, into that shouldn't be something to recommend to just "everyone", and that this is an issue because "Netflix" is pretty much the first web anyone is going to try installing as an App (since it works so much better than the Native Windows App...).
@AkazaRenn interesting. I'm not able to repro this in 86.0.622.38. Can you give me exact repro steps? There is an interesting complication to this code path, so it could be caused by a number of things.
You can't do this in Edge, because while it does have the `chrome://apps/` url, Edges version of this page is not drop sensitive. So the only way you can add "pwa apps" to edge is via the provided controls the url if the site exposes all the right meta tags and files.
This will install around 254MB of packages, mainly it will install wine-compholio (a custom version of wine that is able to run Silverlight) and dependencies. If wine is not installed already you may need to agree to use Microsoft fonts (in the text mode window use arrow keys or tab to reach the red "ok" button in text mode when it appears). The download/installation takes around 15 minutes.
If something went wrong in the installation (third party links are involved), don't panic: netflix-desktop will detect that something is missing and try to reinstall it, if that also fails, start over.
The window will open in fullscreen, which is very elegant, but if you want to have control over the window press F11 right away to exit fullscreen mode. (It may also ask to install a Firefox extension --specially designed-- that makes fullscreen mode more friendly.)

Bonus: By running this you have a fully functional Firefox 17 (Windows version) with working Silverlight that can be used to navigate other sites, by pressing F10 -> View -> Toolbars -> Navigation menu on the main window you can access any site and be able to use Silverlight.
If you don't like the appearance of the scroll bars, you can enable Chrome's overlay scrollbars. Go to chrome://flags/#overlay-scrollbars and Enable them. Now you have scrollbars that complete the experience:
Old chrome versions will block netflix from working, so this is important. You may need to update the user-agent to the latest version (by checking a local install or trying something from -info.net/useragents)Also in the text box, replace the "all_urls" to netflix.com. This will apply the changed user-agent to netflix only
Enter netflix, trying to see a show/movie, firefox will warn that it needs to enable DRM support. Accept and it will download and install the widevine DRM plugin. Wait a minute and reload the page. Sometimes you need to go back and try again, but it will work
I read a while ago that it might be possible to run a Wii emulator instead of virtual box, but I don't think that would be an improvement for most people. I've been meaning to try Netflix in an android emulator since the app came out, however I still need to test if it will actually work. The problem is that the app is only "approved" for certain phones. There is a hack that is suppose to work for rooted phones, So I think there's a good chance this could be a better solution than virtual box, but it's hard to say for sure.
Moonlight, while it is an open-source alternative to Silverlight, does not work for Netflix. The reason that this does not work for Netflix is that Netflix also requires DRM support, which Moonlight does not give.
You will want to virtualize Windows XP/Vista/7 on Ubuntu. I would recommend Virtualbox, but you are free to use whatever you want. Under the virtual machine, you can use the real Silverlight and DRM-support and watch Netflix.
As it's installed, there is a read/write permission on disks that does not allow us to make changes and therefore does not allow us to install Widevine. We can change it from Ubuntu Software (the snap shop).
Can you provide one of the domains that you are running into an issue with that isn't covered by an exclusion? Keep in mind, depending on how you have things configured if the firewall detects that it isn't able to decrypt certain traffic without causing an issue, it will put that into a cache to skip decryption going forward so it doesn't continue to break the site for users.
I am facing a problem with the certificate(When I enabled the decryption and tried to open the website in Mozilla and internet explorer it is working as expected means it is taking the same self-sign certificate which I have generated).
Example:- For testing, I have created a custom URL category only for (youtube+facebook+netflix). this is policy i mention in decryption rule with decrypt SSL forward proxy. and I have an import certificate already in my machine. when i try to open this URL in Mozilla and Internet explorer it is working as expected both browsers are taking a certificate which i have import however in chrome i can't see the same certificate this browser is taking its own google certificate why ?????
