ACTION NEEDED NOW!

House Bill on reauthorization of the State Children's Health Insurance Program (SCHIP) is scheduled for markup in the Committee on Energy and Commerce TOMORROW, Wednesday, July 25 at 4pm (ET).

WE NEED YOU TO TAKE ACTION BY 12 NOON (ET)!
Please contact your Member of Congress and ask him or her to support including reauthorization of the Special Diabetes Program for Indians (H.R. 2762)
as part of the SCHIP legislation.

The House Energy and Commerce Committee is slated to review the State Children's Health Insurance Program (SCHIP) TOMORROW, Wednesday, July 25 at 4pm ET.

SCHIP provides health insurance to children whose parents cannot afford it, but who are not eligible for Medicaid.  Its reauthorization is an opportunity to also reauthorize the Special Diabetes Program for Indians (SDPI).

This is vital because the SDPI is set to expire in 2008.

ACT NOW!   HERE'S HOW:

Below is a table showing the Members of Congress on the Energy and Commerce Committee.

If on the Committee, please call or fax the first attached template to your Representative requesting support for including the SDPI in the SCHIP legislation.

If not on the Committee, please call or fax the second attached template to your Representative, urging him or her to personally contact and persuade the Members of the Committee to include the SDPI in the SCHIP legislation.

Talking points on including the SDPI in SCHIP

-         The SDPI has a strong emphasis on serving AI/AN children and youth - particularly with diabetes screening and prevention efforts.
-         Of the SDPI's almost 400 programs nationwide, 83% target primary diabetes prevention activities at AI/AN children and youth.
-         The Senate SCHIP bill has a provision for funding childhood obesity prevention programs.  Many of the activities associated with such programs compliment or are practically identical to diabetes prevention and screening programs conducted through the SDPI.  Obesity and diabetes prevention go hand in hand - particularly for AI/AN youth, who are disproportionately vulnerable to both diseases.
-         It is well documented that American Indians have some of the highest rates of diabetes in the world, however what is cause for even graver concern is that risk and presence of type 2 diabetes - which typically develops later in life - is being diagnosed among Indian children at alarming rates.
-         The SCHIP and the SDPI were originally established together as parts of the Balanced Budget Act of 1997, so they have been closely linked since their inception.

Please contact your Member of Congress and ask him or her to support including the Special Diabetes Program for Indians, H.R. 2762, in the SCHIP legislation.
