Talking ASEAN on

ASEAN’s Response to the Rohingya Migrant Crisis”

In recent months, Southeast Asia has witnessed an unprecedented number of refugees stranded at sea. The situation has escalated into a large scale humanitarian crisis, and requires immediate collective action from both ASEAN and the international community at large. Critical in mitigating the Rohingya refugee crisis is the need to address the problem at its core, and to focus efforts on conflict resolution processes. Developing a regional solution, however, will come with a number of challenges. Efforts to relieve the situation thus far have been largely uncoordinated and inconsistent, highlighting the need for ASEAN to establish a greater sense of political unity on the issue. Another problem is the long-cherished principle of ‘non-interference’ in the domestic affairs of fellow ASEAN member-states. With recent events demonstrating clearly that the issue is now having a regional impact and is affecting others in ASEAN such as Indonesia, Malaysia and Thailand, the very principle of “non-interference” comes under question.
