The book T-SQL Fundamentals by Ben-Gan titled "SQL Server 2021: A Design and Technique for Designing Distributed Applications" is a great book for those who are already familiar with designing databases. However, for someone new to designing their own server or even for those who want to learn more about how databases work there is much that can be learned from this book. Of course, the main purpose of such a book is to provide server administrators with the basics they need to understand and manage a database. If one only has basic understanding of the SQL language, then this book will not help much. However, if one already knows the basics and is more interested in learning how to use the various features available then this book will be a good and necessary read.
One thing that is very common throughout the book is the use of an example to illustrate the various concepts. Using an actual database, either for testing or learning the SQL language, is always helpful. Especially when dealing with complicated concepts like DML, DDL and ALTER UTILITY, it is very helpful to see how one would go about using the commands in the book. For example, one might see how to create a catalog using the catalog stored inside the "custodial" on the server.
While this book is quite helpful to anyone who is just beginning their career as a server administrator, it might be better to not read it if one already has a good working knowledge of SQL. This is because the book might prove too technical for someone who does not know the intricacies of the SQL language. However, it is still a very helpful book for those who already know how to use SQL. It may prove useful to new hires for giving them an in-depth look into how the server works. In short, T-SQL is an excellent book to learn and understand not only for new users but also for the more experienced ones.
