When you are dumb enough for long enough you'll meet someone smarter than you, and they are going to love you regardless, and it is going to go badly, Neil Hilborn offers up his debut full length album, YOUR NUMBERED AFTERNOON. As with so many things in life, the band name, YOU ONLY NEED THE BIGGER PIN...IS STILL appropriate for this collection, but unfortunately, it just does not quite fit. A good five songs, including one classic song "Hollywood Slang" (also by the band before they broke up) should be enough to make this album an instant hit.
The production on this album is very nice; most of the songs have a slightly distorted but still decent guitar sound. I especially like "Good Riddance Day" which features backup vocals from Tim Rice. The songs are mostly sung by Neil Young, with occasional guest spots from former members of Royal Blood and Deft. Songs like "Hollywood Slang" (which came out on their first album) is a great homage to the early 70's rock and roll generation, and "Reelin' in the Years" is a nice ode to the music of 60's era.
Though it is mostly a collection of songs from the past (which is quite well done), the real strength of this album is actually the voice. Neil Young has always been an excellent singer, but he takes his abilities to a whole new level on this album. Vocals are mixed with acoustic guitar for some of his best work, which helps this album to stand on its own among much of the post-modern rock that was happening at the time (and still is). It would have also been a great follow up to "Rocky Ride". Overall, this is a great album that will please those that like poppy and acoustic music, as well as those that like hard rock. If you like modern rock at all, then this album is highly recommended.
