Bowa denies reports of agreeing to join Yankees

ESPN baseball analyst Larry Bowa on Friday denied a newspaper report that he has agreed to join the Yankees' staff as a third-base coach.

Oct. 21 ESPN baseball analyst Larry Bowa on Friday denied a report that he has agreed to join the New York Yankees' coaching staff.

According to the Bergen (N.J.) Record, Bowa reportedly has agreed to a one-year contract to become the Yankees' third-base coach.

Bowa, however, has told ESPN that talks are continuing with the Yankees and he hopes to have a resolution by the end of the weekend.

Bowa was contacted Thursday by GM Brian Cashman and manager Joe Torre about the possibility of Bowa joining the Yankees' staff next for season.

"I haven't made any decisions yet," Bowa told ESPN on Thursday.

The Record also reported Friday that Lee Mazzilli, who was fired as the Orioles' manager midway through the 2005 season, is being strongly considered to rejoin the Yankees' coaching staff. Mazzilli coached first base for the Yankees before becoming Orioles manager before the 2004 season.

Bowa, who is in his first season as a Baseball Tonight analyst, previously served as the manager of the Padres (1987-88) and Phillies (2001-04). Bowa was fired by the Phillies on the final weekend of the 2004 season after leading the team to a 337-308 record. Known for a fiery personality, he was 81-127 in 1½ seasons with San Diego.

He has also served as a third base coach for the Phillies, Angels, and Mariners in his career.

New York has two coaching openings following the departures of bench coach Joe Girardi and pitching coach Mel Stottlemyre.

Bowa is scheduled to work for ESPN at the World Series in Houston starting Monday.
