Tf1's Fail Service Manual Tests

Hey guys - I have a TX-816 that suddenly started sounding wonky. There was a very slow pitch glide (like a very slow portamento) happening that I isolated to 2 TF1's in the rack. I put them into Test mode and sure enough, they didn't pass the Pitch or Auto-Scaling checks while all the other modules passed. 

As it happens, the batteries also need replacing in all of my Tf1's, so I have a few questions and thanks in advance for any assist here: 

1. Can dead batteries cause this kind of behavior?

2. If it's not the batteries, what is the best approach for repairing TF1's? Am I better off trying to locate two new ones or send them to a reputable repair shop? 

3, Any suggestions for a good place to have repairs performed?
