HOPE CHANNEL ADDS THIRD CHANNEL FOR AFRICA
A new television channel for speakers of major indigenous African languages will soon launch as part of Hope Channel, the global television network of the Seventh-day Adventist Church.
Three divisions of the Seventh-day Adventist Church in Africa are joining together to enhance the culturally-relevant Hope Channelsavailable to everyone across the African continent.
The new indigenous African language channel will cover sub-Sahara Africa with a signal broadcasting from the Intelsat-10 satellite. It will be added to the network’s current 13 satellite broadcast channels to provide possibility for programming in languages such as Swahili, Bemba, Afrikaans, Xhosa, French, Zulu, and other key languages. Each selected language will receive a regular time slot.
As a result of this development a change in reception parameters forHope Channel viewers in Africa will occur between August 1 - 30, 2012. During this time all Hope Channel viewers in Africa will need to change their reception parameters in their receivers to continue to receive Hope Channel and to receive the new indigenous language Hope Channel. This change does not affect viewers of the Portuguese language Novo Tempo Hope Channel in Africa.
“This new channel will take Hope Channel to millions of new viewers who only speak their native language. The channel will assist in serving the seven plus million members of the rapidly growing Adventist church across Africa,” says Brad Thorp, Hope Channelpresident. “It will empower various major constituencies to have their own regular programming on the Hope Channel network, and gives them a powerful new evangelistic instrument to use with friends and neighbors.”
“There is tremendous creative talent across Africa and it is exciting to realize that this new Hope Channel will allow for the gospel, including the health message, to be contextualized and reach many more with the message of Jesus Christ,” says Kandus Thorp, Hope Channel’s vice president for production.
Hope Channel International (English) and Hope Channel Novo Tempo (Portuguese for Angola and Mozambique) currently broadcast in Africa. The new indigenous African language channel will be the third full-time channel that serves sub-Sahara Africa, along with radio services provided by Hope Channel.
Officials anticipate a September launch for the new channel. A major NET evangelism event from Uganda with Pastor Blasious Ruguri, president of the East Central Africa Division, is scheduled in September, and the new channel will carry the event in seven of the region’s most-spoken languages.
A joint three-Division Hope Channel Africa Committee is being organized by Hope Channel to regularly meet and guide the strategic development of television programming and distribution for Africa.Officials anticipate that the current Hope Channel International(English) will retain its essential programming core, but transition tooffer considerably more African-produced programming as a companion service to the indigenous language channel.
Thorp expressed his deep appreciation for the vision of the Southern African-Indian Ocean Division (SID) that has led this initiative.
“President Ratsara and Secretary Maphosa, along with Treasurer Nthani, jointly strongly support this expansion. They see the great need and have given it full support. The SID has generouslysupported Hope Channel initiatives for seven years, but this newdevelopment calls for more resources,” says Thorp.
“The East-Central Africa Division (ECD) has also been supportiveand is committed to expanding its backing for this new development. The West-Central Africa Division (WAD) for the first time has committed their financial sponsorship, demonstrating strong supportto expand Hope Channel programming production from their region,”he adds.
The contract with Intelsat for space to continue the English language channel and the new indigenous language channel on satellite IS-10 was finalized July 10 by Gideon Mutero, Hope Channel’s vicepresident of finance.
