Y-Knot Updates

Hello Sailors & Volunteers - 

Thank you for an amazing summer on Lake George! I wanted to take a moment to update you on our remaining Y-Knot opportunities for the Fall. Due to some conflicts with other camp programs, we will not be able to host a regatta this year. We do have 2 dates left in September, largely for volunteers to assist, but also some space for sailors to squeeze in one more day of sailing. 

• Sept. 9: The YMCA Circle of Champs program will be visiting Camp for a family picnic day and a "try it out" sailing opportunity. This is a program dedicated to improving the quality of life for children battling a life-threatening illness and is a great opportunity to introduce the youth and their families to the sport of sailing and the opportunity to volunteer with us in the future! We are looking for some volunteers to assist with some quick sails in a Martin, some may need assistance with the lift and also would love to have a few sailors join to go for a sail and share their experience with Y-Knot with the Champs families. If you are able to volunteer or are a sailor able to join, please RSVP here. 
  
  
• Sept. 17: Y-Knot regular JR Hardenburgh has organized an MS Sailing Day on Lake George! This is a great opportunity for us to recruit some new sailors and volunteers! We are looking for some volunteers to join to help folks sail as we are expecting a mix of first-time sailors and more seasoned sailors. Again, volunteers can register here. 

Coming soon - information on a boat de-rig/clean-up day and an end-of-season Sailabration banquet (likely in November) + more details about next year's sailing!

Hi Bill - 

  We had about 8 staff who in May were scheduled to work in October who have changed their plans and are now leaving either this weekend or on Labor Day. This puts us in an extremely short-staff position for the programs we had already booked back in May when we anticipated having more staff. Now, with significantly fewer staff and programs booked 6 days a week, we are no longer able to offer a regatta on the 10th. I can look at the schedule next week when we finalize staff time off needs to see if a later September date may work but as I said we are in a tough spot with staffing. 

Due to our insurance and Y policies, we are not able to have any programs on-site without a staff point person so we can't just have volunteers run the event. I will email everyone should we be able to find another date in September. 

Apologies again for our fumbles here and there as we continue to rebuild our year-round programs and staff teams.

Given that your May 15 email stated:

 "Regatta - as of now, I have a 1-day opportunity booked for September 10 (we are somewhat limited with other programs and weddings we already have on the books, the only date available for 2-day races would be in October). 

So throughout this summer we have been indicating that our students could look forward to that date this year.  Many are enthusiastic and will be disappointed.

1.  What happened?  

2.  The Y Knot regatta doesn't require much of the camp. We merely need access to the YKnot docks and Martins, plus availability of one outboard.  We have enthusiastic volunteer staff, and some have a PV license.  As last year, I would provide the race committee and organization.

Hi all,

 

There have been some developments here at camp for our September schedule and we think it will be feasible, and we would be happy to host the Y-Knot  Regatta on September 10^th.

 

Bill, thank you so much for your leadership with last year’s 1-day regatta. I think if we were to proceed with a similar structure to that, we will be able to have a very successful event.

 

Next Steps:

 

Staff: We will have 2 staff members available (I will be one of the staff, and will have another with PV with us that day). I will also make sure there is lunch/snacks available.

 

Volunteers: We will aim to have at least 10 volunteers. If any volunteers plan on attending, please let me know directly.

 

Bill/Race Committee: Please just let me know what you need regarding supplies or help with any logistics, and how we plan to have Sailors RSVP and which fleet they may be sailing in.

 

Additionally, we will still have the Sept. 9: YMCA Circle of Champs program visiting Camp for a family picnic day and a "try it out" sailing opportunity, and the Sept. 17 MS Sailing day for all volunteers that are interested in participating.

 

Please communicate this with any sailors and volunteers that may be interested but might not see this email.

That's fantastic news. I would definitely love to participate and we'll sign up. Thanks so much for the update Michael! Also thank you so much to Bill, Evan and everyone else who worked on that schedule update. I'm continuing to watch the updates from Toronto mobility cup rooting for Eric rose. I had an infected elbow and was in the hospital for a week but now I am doing much better. It's these last few days of nice warm weather before the cold chilly weather it's pretty awesome that the camp makes available the time and getting the chance to get in that racing.

hi Mike, 

Thanks so much for the update and for all it took to get the regatta back on. That's great news! And for your committment to support our event.

I'll be getting with Bill Dutcher asap to attend to some planning and we'll let you know as we get closer as far as anything we need to discuss. 

As for all our sailors and their crews, as well as all volunteers planning to help that day, I encourage you to connect with me, so Bill and I can sketch out how the day will roll out and who we can count on to attend. The plan is to have things pretty laid out prior to race day to ensure everything goes smoothly. 

In addition, I'll watch the registrations for the 9th as that's an adaptive kayaking day for many of our sailors that also do that.

And the 17th...and I'll call JR and see if he needs any additional support on this end to insure his event sails smoothly. And I'll plan on being there the remaining three event days to assist.
