Karl Matti's suggestion worked for me so make sure to use root as user name, then debian for the password. Remember to change using the passwd command. Thanks.
I am using the May 2015 build of the image.

Thanks for the help, I was getting pretty frustrated with the provided user/pass not working. I've got a screen for my PI and so far there is no GUI/home/ desktop showing up... does this mean that this is meant to be run headless? The whole reason I got the screen was to make it more user friendly, doesn't help if there is no GUI and I have to SSH into the damn thing to get it working.
