The purpose of this study was to determine the prevalence of forced sex among high school students and to assess student attitudes about it. The questionnaires were given in conjunction with a presentation on date rape to 9th through 12th grade students in health and science classes in three large metropolitan Louisiana public high schools. The first questionnaire, given before the presentation, elicited demographic information and attitudes about forced sex in 11 scenarios; the second, given after the program, asked if the student had ever been in a situation involving forced sex and, if so, whether he or she had told anyone. The two questionnaires were completed by all 237 students. Although one out of five students (20%) reported they had experienced forced sex, only half had told about the experience. A majority of boys (60%) found it acceptable in one or more situations for a boy to force sex on a girl. Male, black, and older students were significantly more likely (p < 0.05) to indicate that it was acceptable for a boy to force sex on a girl in certain circumstances. These findings should alert physicians to the risk of acquaintance rape among their high school student patients. Student attitudes, particularly those of males, may provide an important focus of preventive sex education in the physician's office, the classroom, and the community.
A 17-year-old schoolgirl and two men shown having group sex with her in a pornographic videotape have gone on trial in Dongguan, Guangdong Province, accused by the local prosecutor of "group licentiousness."
Nevertheless, the teenage defendant, identified only by the pseudonym Li Jie, a student at Houjie Vocational School, and the two men shown on the sex tape stood trial at Dongguan No.2 People's Court on Monday, Guangzhou Daily reported Tuesday.
Houjie township police said that Li was not coerced into playing sex games on tape. One of the men allegedly confessed to police that Li had dated him before they made the porno tape, according to Nanfang Daily.
Ma Yaohai, 53, an associate university professor in Nanjing, Jiangsu Province, was sentenced to three and a half years in prison on May 20 for organizing 18 wife-swapping events, of which 14 were held at his home.
During the defendant's trial earlier this spring, a 17-year-old girl involved in one of the sex videos testified that she hadn't known she was being recorded. She broke down crying on the stand.
Two other girls also testified during the trial; three other victims did not.
Prosecutor Laura Riddlebarger said the victims will have to live with the fear that the videos will someday resurface even after they've tried to move on.
"Some of [the victims'] most intimate moments are on video,' she said. "...We can't be 100 percent sure they're not somewhere out there."
Defense attorney Jonathan Phillips blamed the media and blogs for victimizing his client, the young defendant.
"He cannot remove himself from the web searches," Phillips said. "He cannot remove himself from the limelight of the media."
NBC Washington is not naming the defendant because he is a minor.
He had faced up to 10 years in prison, but Fairfax County judge Thomas Mann said in court that he didn't want the teen's life to be ruined.
In a soft yet direct voice, he told the defendant: "I'm not going to lecture you, but some words need to be said, so I'm going to say them."
He said the defendant turned what was supposed to be "personal and private" into something "cheap and nasty," and while the defendant will spend time in a "physical cage," it doesn't compare to the "emotional cage" his victims are in.
The teen was also sentenced to 100 hours of community service and 12 months of probation. He must also undergo a drug/alcohol evaluation and take victim impact courses.
Mann promised to reduce the felonies to misdemeanors after 12 months if the defendant did something to contribute to the community.
"You need to choose what you will do to make this community great to in some way atone for your actions," he said.
He told the defendant he needed to be a "blessing for this community rather than a source of darkness."
The teen will take his last final exam for the school year Friday while in a juvenile detention facility.
The defendant's lawyer said they have decided not to appeal at this time, Culver reported. An appeal could have created the possibility of a stricter sentence.
The accused has been identified as R. Sridhar, of Anna Nagar, a chemistry teacher. He was arrested by the police following a complaint from a member of the District Child Welfare Committee. The school teacher had indulged in sexual assault by way of inappropriate touches. He had also sent obscene messages to a few girls, police sources said. The offences were committed by him since March. He had also threatened the girls not to disclose anything to anyone, sources added.
Recently, the girls reported the issue to one of the women teachers in the school who in turn brought it to the notice of a Child Welfare Committee (CWC) member. Following a thorough enquiry by the CWC member, a complaint was forwarded along with an audio file of the conversation and WhatsApp chats to the All Women Police, Thirumangalam.
Based on the complaint, the police have registered a case under Sections 10 (Punishment for aggravated sexual assault) read with 9 (Aggravated sexual assault), 21 (Punishment for failure to report or record a case) of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act and 506 (Punishment for Criminal Intimidation) of the IPC. He was remanded in judicial custody after being produced before a court, said the police.
