Sketchup Mac Keyboard Shortcuts

Keystrokes seem to be delayed or missing. For example after choosing the Move/Copy tool, pressing the Ctrl key to invoke the Copy function sometimes works immediately, sometimes it has to be pressed several times or holding it for several seconds before the + sign emerges.

I had the same problem, after installing SketchUp the shortcuts did not work (wine 1.7.x and 1.8.0). I solved it by resetting all shortcuts in the SketchUp shortcuts menu (Window - Preferences - Shortcuts - Reset all).

I am using wine 1.8 ubuntu 14.04 and sketchup 2016 64bit. I had loads of trouble getting keyboard input to work properly for shortcuts. I had to hit a key multiple times or hold it down so it repeats. I changed the windows version to 10 in wine configure for sketchup and it now works as it should.

Please ignore my other post I inadvertently ignored the first rule of fault finding, only change one thing at a time. Ubuntu 14.04 wine 1.8 sketchup 2016. Shortcuts called by keyboard strokes stop working reliably when the default tray in sketchup is brought up with the instructor enabled. The workaround is to disable the instructor in the tray selector menu. Something in the instructor is messing with the keyboard focus. After doing this you need to restart sketchup to make keystrokes work again.

A lot of users will typically feel overwhelmed with most keyboard shortcuts lists for design programs. Lucky for SketchUp users, SketchUp actually keeps its list short and neat. And really, with how easy the program is to use, you only need so much keyboard shortcuts.

How can you become faster at modeling? In this article, I highlight the keyboard shortcuts I use most often, and demonstrate how helpful they are in saving time while modeling. You can also download my custom keyboard shortcuts at the bottom of this article, and import them into your SketchUp.

I have always been a strong advocate for using keyboard shortcuts. They are a tremendous time saver, enabling you to get your ideas modeled more quickly. They reduce the friction between the design and the software. Modeling becomes more fluid and natural.

In addition to the default keyboard shortcuts that I use, I have found the need over the years to add a few additional custom keyboard shortcuts as well. You can add your own custom keyboard shortcuts, or, if you like the one I use, you can download my keyboard shortcuts and import them right into SketchUp. (Download link at end of tutorial.)

One of the things I love about having dual monitors is that I can place all the popup windows in one screen, and have a full workspace in the other. But sometimes I have everything in one screen if I need to have the other monitor occupied by a PDF, or something.

SketchUp has a built-in command that hides all open windows temporarily. If things are getting cluttered and I need to be able to see my model, I just hit CTRL D to hide all the windows, and when I need the windows back, I hit CTRL D once again.

One of the most common things you do in SketchUp is turn things into groups and components. SketchUp already has the letter G assigned to make a component from the selected entities, so it only seemed right to create a custom shortcut using SHIFT + G to make a group.

Paste in Place allows you to copy or cut an object from one group/component, and paste it into another without moving it from its physical location. When you Paste in Place, the copy will appear at the same exact coordinates and orientation as the original.

And looking past speed (because you could just get really good with keyboard shortcuts), a mouse has one other advantage. And that is that using the scroll wheel on your mouse, you can actually zoom, pan, and orbit while another tool is selected.

Being able to move around with another tool selected can be a more common use case than you might initially think. For example, you may find yourself trying to drag a rectangle from one partially concealed reference point to another. I find this can often be the case with recessed joinery like mortises or dadoes. To accomplish this, you may want to move your camera to get the first reference point in view, start dragging your rectangle, rotate to bring the second reference into view, and then complete the rectangle.
