Basic question. I have an old hard drive id like to copy the entire contents over to a portable external hd.

I have selected the old dh as the source, and I have selected my portable hd as the target (i have pointed the target to a folder on my external hd). If I proceed, will all the data on the external hd be deleted? Or will just the contents in the folder I pointed the target to be deleted?

I dont want any other folders in the root of my external hd to be deleted.

If you are just looking at copying data, rather than trying to transfer an operating system, then Xxclone would not be the tool you should be using.  A more appropriate alternative would be Xxcopy, but the viability of that approach may be in question following the death earlier this year of the creator of both Xxclone and Xxcopy, and there apparently are no arrangements for ongoing support.

You might search out alternatives for Xxcopy.

FWIW, Xxclone would fully replace the contents of the hard drive "partition" to which data is copied, and the effect would not be limited to a targeted folder on the partition.  The effect of Xxcopy could be constrained to a specific folder.

Good luck,
Dan

I've said once or twice already that I have a copy that seems not to care about  os or date, and I'd be glad to send it to whoever asks.

I wouldn't do this for copyrighted software except the alternative doesn't benefit anyone, including the copyright holder or his heirs.   So I think it is something like lost property.

I hope that instead of turning people away, the posters here will refer them to me.

I'm running it on win10.

Unfortunately for BML, I'm going out of town for two weeks tomorrow morning, and probably won't have time to work on this.

I will be reading my email and maybe you can help me with some of this

Is it essential to run the installer or is it enough to copy all the files to wherever they go?

I was going to try both methods on another computer, but I have a lot of copies of various things and just havent' had time, though I've already promised one person a copy by the end of November.

If you can include another address for me to write to that would help too because I'm having trouble with smtp on gmail and I've learned that I hate the web interface.  I used my gmail address because this is a google group, and I guess I can  resubscribe, but no time tonight or on the road.

This is very strange.  I don't even want gmail on my phone, until I set up K-9 and only when I ask for it,  which will usually be never, but it comes anyhow, and my own post showed up there almost as soon as I sent it.  It also showed up in my pop mail not long after that, But here it is 5 minutes later or so, and it still hasn't shown up at the gmail inbox..  Is there something I need to do to refresh the inbox?  I've clicked on Inbox and nothing happens.

Anyhow, I apologize for being unclear.  I was replying to your second and third sentences, about finding an alternative to xxcopy.   I have xxcopy.   I haven't been able to make a copy of xxclone work either.

I guess my mind is like a dog's.  Once the topic turned to xxcopy I forgot all about xxclone!

Do you still want it, even though it's xxcopy?
