The Callanetics exercise programme was created by Callan Pinckney in the early 1980s. It is a system of exercise involving frequent repetition of small muscular movements and squeezes, designed to improve muscle tone.[1] The programme was developed by Pinckney from classical ballet exercises, to help ease a back problem that she was born with.

The theory of callanetics is that the surface muscles of the body are supported by deeper muscles, but popular exercise programmes often exercise only the surface muscles. According to callanetics, deeper muscles are best exercised using small but precise movements. Exercising the deeper muscles also leads to improved posture, which may result in the appearance of weight loss even if very little weight was lost.[2]

Pinckney also recommends exercising with clothing that highlights (however of course not to flatter) the body's natural shape, and exercising in bright light, to show up the body's imperfections to the exerciser.

The video version of the exercise routine was released by MCA Home Video in November 1986 at a retail price of $29.95 and was a big hit, selling 1 million copies in the United States by January 1990, one of MCA's biggest sellers at the time.[3]

By Karen Browne While her twin daughters were on a dance tour last spring, they called their mother, Katha Bardel, an Oklahoma City ballet teacher, and told her about some exercises called callanetics.

However, callanetics is not an aerobic workout, and that's a major drawback if it is all a person does for exercise, said orthopedic surgeon William Grana, after reading about the exercises described in the book.

Directions for one exercise for the behind and hips give some idea of the precision of callanetics: Sit on the floor, facing the barre or whatever you're using as a barre with the right leg bent in front of the body. Extend left leg to the side and bend left knee so that foot is behind the body.

Holding that position, lift left knee 2 inches higher. Gently move left leg back 1 inch, keeping left hip rolled forward so that both hips are even. Return leg forward 1 inch. Repeat 75 times on each side.

Because I've bought the DVD because I'm ever hopeful!

I can't complain about my weight, BMI is and has nearly always been 22 and although I'd like to be thinner I realise that with my big bone structure it's never really going to happen. But I reckon that with the right kind of exercise I might be able to change my shape a bit (thinner thighs and flatter tummy would be good).

My youngest is now old enough that I should have long ago done something about the tummy - it's not huge but as I'm flat chested I feel a flat tummy would enhance my whole figure.

So has anyone done Callanetics and is it as effective as it claims to be? Or can you recommend any other good exercise for reshaping?

Thanks

If I could afford a gym and if DH was ever home before the gym closed so I could go I would definitely go! I used to love body conditioning classes. But , right now home exercise is the best I can manage.

I will proceed with caution re backs. Thanks for the warning.

Ooh madmomma that is exciting. Can I ask how often you do it and how long it took to see big changes? My worry is that I'll get bored of doing the same 1hr DVD even once (let alone twice) a week. Did you do other forms of exercise as well? In what way did your body change? I hope you don't mind all the questions!
Thanks

I am surprised that it hurt your back nethunsreject. I have done it on/off for twenty years and can't think how you would hurt it.

I have only used a book to do callanetics but I think it is great. I don't do all of the exercises, just the leg/bum/tum/waist/warm up ones.

It is basically pilates isn't it? You would do better to do a basic pilates course and learn about your core muscles under supervision. Then do the Callanetics at home and you'll avoid injuries like Nethunsreject (and me too, I knackered my shoulder just doing the warm ups first time as a teenager!)

It was the curling-your-pelvis-under thing which buggered my back. It can cause issues with t-spine area and is no longer considered good practice by physios apparently. It was the thing to do in the 90s though.

It works, i did it through my twenties. I am back doing it. After two weeks my waist is back. ( couple of inches gone)

Just try the waist excercise you will be amazed. google it.

You need to follow the instructions to the letter, in front of a mirror to avoid injuring your self.

Apparently madonna and gwenyth do it.

I did it to begin with because I'd hurt my back, and it really helped. If you follow her instructions to move in 'triple-slow-motion' you won't injure yourself. I used the book 'callanetics for your back'. I then started using the normal callanetics programme and it completely changed my shape. If you put the time in initially to learn the method (and you'll need the book to support this), it will pay off, believe me. If you do it properly for two one hr sessions per week, you'll easily go down a dress size in 8 weeks. Easily. And that's with no other changes to diet or other exercise. It pulls you in very quickly. I just started it again today, 11 wks after having my 3rd child by c section. I feel very excited cos I know it works so fast. After a few months you'll be able to do it without the video. Your arse will look amazing!

The video!!! It will drive you insane with her stupid voice, but you need the visuals to get how to do it i think. As above you will soon not need the vid.
Apparently it has now been copied to a dvd but that looks pricey.

There are a few free excercises on google if you wanted to dip you toe in t he water.

Well last night I did an hour of the Ten Years Younger in Ten Hours DVD and it was hard work and today I really feel my muscles have worked. I suspect tomorrow I'll be unable to walk downstairs!

I'd settle for 5 years younger (ie pre-DC). I'm going to make a note of my measurements and do 10 hours over the next 5 weeks and report back if you like.

I've never done Pilates so can't compare.

I remember doing the video workout 20 years ago and to this day I can still hear her say 'squeeze those inner thighs, you don't want them to wobble down the supermarket aisle' (or something like that). I do occasionally, put my legs either side of a chair and squeeeeeeze.

I've found this treasure when I was a teenager some 20+ years ago. My ex-Stepmother had a copy of this book and I took it an read it. Suffice to say I never returned it... LOL :-) I still do have it to this day. It is by FAR the best workout book I have ever (well I can't say bought... haha) came across.

I have been getting many requests for tips on how I'm being able to keep my shape the way I am. I'd say there are several factors to this. Firstly, eating low carb... it does help with belly flab!! Believe that. Low carb eaters have much flatter tummies than those who do not.

Second, my running really is helping sculpt a very lean body structure. I can't say enough about this!! I don't think I've EVER been able to get my legs to cooperate as much as I can right now with looking thinner all the time.

Third, and this is what I'm sharing here with you all. It is called Callanetics: 10 Years Younger in 10 Hours. Best. Muscle toning workout. EVER!!! It does NOT bulk you up. I have a hard time keeping this from happening which is why I don't really do a lot of weight training. I don't want to look like a bodybuilder! I could get this way very easily. Instead these workouts only tone and sculpt a very lean and sexy figure, for both women AND men. There are testimonial pages showing this within the book. I just now bought the complimentary DVD's and I am planning to take these workouts to a whole new level.

I hope this inspires some! I'm not kidding these workouts are pretty amazing. Little known in the workout world but so worth it if you find it. FYI, some of the DVD's are a waste and are not created by the original founder of these workouts. If it's not by Callan Pinckney, don't waste your money on it. *hugs*

Thanks I'm not kidding when I say these workouts are AMAZING with sculpting the figure!! If anything it's these that single-handedly shaped my figure. Keeping my booty firm, making my waist tiny. However, my legs and batwings I owe it all to my running. And my belly flatness is from lower carbs.

I agree 100% that these exercises work! I had a weight problem in junior high and I lost about 50 pounds. I also did Callanetics and I was able to maintain a toned body for quite some time. When I had kids and gained lots of weight, I stopped doing the exercises. I recently started doing them again (I found an old video at my mom's) due to the skin issue I am having. Callanetics is really helping me tone up. It really does work!

Do you use the book or the DVD? I want to try this at the gym because for some reason, I am too lazy to work out at home EVER! But, when I go to the gym I will actually work out! I am hoping I can learn the exercises and do them at the gym... any advice?

Well I pretty much have always used the book. I still have one of the original prints made decades ago. I have my several favorites that I've pretty much always been doing, even at my heaviest. But I'm going to dig much deeper into the routines now that I'm much lighter and should be able to do the more difficult ones. I just bought the DVD set and should be here today!!!
