Hi folks,

I have been paying out of my own pocket for the hosting for xuggle.com for the past 12 months, and I fear, alas, the time has come for that to stop.  I'm using AWS and it costs me about $100 (US) per month.

So on March 31st, the site will be going offline.  If someone wants to host it in the future, they are welcome to (and I am happy to change the domain records to point to your site).

The source code for the web-site can be found here:

Finally, thank you all for the help and support you have given xuggle over the years.  It has been an absolute pleasure to have been involved with the project, and I (and Robert) have fond memories.

- Art

p.s. I know there are cheaper hosting offers, but I don't have the time available right now to set it up.  Sorry.

Maybe you could set up some way to donate? I don't know how much I can help but maybe we can find $100 to keep it running for another year.

That would be $1200 per year, it's $100 per month.

Art is that primarily bandwidth costs?

What does this (and the other post about xuggler 5.5) mean about xuggler in the future?  No active development, no precompiled binaries, etc?  In my opinion, there just isn't a better solution to media in Java.

If this is just regarding the hosting (not build servers), then I would be happy to host it if this keeps the project going.  Are you referring to the domain being transferred as well (or will you continue to pay for that)?

William

Art,

I'm currently hosting wiki.xuggle.com. I could host xuggle.com if you want.

Jeremy, William,

I am more than happy to make a donation to the cost of hosting. I think that's only but fair. I am using the software and it's key to my system. I'd be lost without it. If you take on hosting and do require a donation let me/us know and I am sure that there will be others out there who would be more than willing to help ensure the site lives on.

Answering questions:
  1. I'm paying for a Amazon perpetual instance (I think a medium, but I set it up 5 years ago and don't remember).  Yes, I'm sure I could optimize that, but at the moment, I am trying to minimize the time I spend on xuggle (sorry).
  2. What I'm proposing is that someone set up the web-server using the code I sent out; It's a Play Framework version 1 application and relatively easy to set up.
  3. Once that's set up, tell me the IP address to redirect xuggle.com to, and I'll update DNS records to point there.
  4. I'm grateful that so many have expressed an interest in donating, but taking donations (especially if you are in the US) is tricky from a tax perspective, and given that I do not own the brand or domain (technically) for xuggle anymore, beyond the scope I can do.  For those who do not know, over 3 years ago Xuggle was sold to ConnectSolutions, Inc (CS).  Over my time at CS we (and I was an executive there) decided that maintaining Xuggle did not make business sense for the strategy CS was following at that time, and the project was turned into a volunteer effort.  Alas, given that I was the main volunteer, I think that momentum has puttered out.
But for all those enthusiastic members out there who are frustrated that the project is not being actively developed, how about you pick it up?  This is open source, under a permissive license, and you're free to do what you want with it under the terms of the LGPL.  I can guarantee that the code base is not rocket science because I'm not a rocket scientist :)

Oh, the other question; no, I will not transfer the domain as that is still CS property.

Art,

I'm not a regular user of xuggle but have used it in the past on projects and would love to donate some resource in return. I'd be happy to cover the hosting for you if no one else has already set this up (have worked with Play, too, so no problems there).

Let me know if no-one else is on this already and i'll set it up today for you :)

Art,

You're all set on

http://54.228.236.37/

let me know if you don't need this (if you've already repointed DNS) and i'll take it back down.

otherwise, let me know when the DNS records are updated. I've forked the xuggle-web git repo and it's currently pointing at my fork - that way will be easier to make changes then hassling you with pull requests - but let me know if that's a problem for you.

anyway, glad to be of help

Thanks Trevor; I will point it today, and check next week that DNS has propagated.  Then I will turn off my server.

Change made; TTL was 1-hour so this should be propagating within the hour.

Trevor, can you repull the source code and redeploy?  I fixed the broken javadoc links.

Thanks,

All done...

Also, i'm happy to host the build server if it's of any use - with no new commits i suppose there's no need for it.

Actually I think is not..

Play framework .. (full webapp) can been deployed free of cost on cloudfoundry.com or appfog.com .. and so on..

Source code.. contributions via github pull requests? or?

Even better.. trasnform all webapp .. thing.. convert static info into Markdown or build a static website clone from Play framework into  a github hosted static site

At the end.. all in one place.. all OSS

:) cheers  .. ahh and there still come https://travis-ci.org/ into another different "Play"

Thanks Trevor.

Getting the build server running is a real beast -- and since I'm not committing, not worth it.

Hi all,

New to Xuggle, but really sad to see it stop just like everyone else :).

I was just wondering, the git repo seems still quite active (4 pull requests and several issues on). I guess Art is managing it.
Maybe ownership should be given to someone else, so that the pull requests can be at least taken care of?

Cheers,
Julien

Jez,

Are you still hosting wiki.xuggle.com? It seems to be down, can you look into it.

Thanks

Art,

Nope, that machine is now offline.  I assumed you didn't want me to host stuff anymore since you didn't need me for the main site.

Jeremy,

We want the wiki to be online like the main site. Please let me know if you can bring it up. If hosting it is a problem for you then i can host it just send me the repository.

How about putting the wiki content onto github's wiki for the project?

Can you host it in the github's wiki?
