Doing so would hopefully stretch out the person's execution. However,
the problem would be the length of time before the condemned one loses
consciousness. (Speaking from experience), it can take as long as a
minute for a man to lose consciousness through strangulation, even
when the strangulation is being caused by a noose around the neck, and
the person is fully suspended. At least that's the longest I've
managed to remain conscious before being strangled out. A woman,
however can take as much as twice as long! Oddly enough, creating the
set-up that causes the person to break their neck (when they are
hanged) doesn't necessarily guarantee that unconsciousness, or death,
will be any quicker! I can fully remember both times when I broke my
neck when I attempted to hang myself. In either situation, I didn't
seem to lose consciousness any faster than if I had not broke my
neck. Hanging isn't normally very painful, at least not in my
opinion, unless the neck is broken. When it happened, yes, it was
extremely painful, and it actually made it seem like a much longer
time frame before I finally passed out! Was the time actually
shorter? I didn't think so, nor do I think so. With the type of
garrott that you are talking about, it could come down to straining
the neck just enough until the victim is on the edge of losing
consciousness, then give one more turn on the wheel to push the ram in
enough to snap his neck. I guess I'm a little warped (or is it
quirky), but I think the victim should be fully conscious when he
feels his neck snap. I know I would want to be fully conscious when
my neck is snapped! Again, it would have to happen when the victim is
just on the verge of losing consciousness.
