Interested in using the latest version of Lucene for our current XTF implementation

We have been using XTF many years now for our Tibetan digital library (Nitartha Digital Library) and are deeply appreciative of the great work done on XTF. Our users especially like XTF's full text search and browse capability with TEI files. This really distinguishes XTF from other digital library implementations.

Since XTF is no longer actively maintained, we have some concerns that we will run into compatibility problems in the future. Since Lucene is actively maintained, we are interested in updating our implementation to use the latest version of Lucene. We have a few questions:

1. Is XTF's custom version of Lucene significantly different from the standard version of Lucene?

2. What were the general reasons for making a modified version of Lucene to support XTF?

3. What XTF Java files interface with Lucene?
