searching for words containing tags

hello to everyone,
and my excuses if my problem has already been debated: but i don't
know how to check for this.
well my problem is that i have TEI tagged texts. these texts contain
words which sometimes contain tags: e.g. co<some tag here>ntain. this
occurrence of contain is not found by a normal search.
is there a way to have the search ignoring everything enclosed between
< and > ?
or any other workaround?
or must i resort to some customization (that is: write java code)?
