Hi,

We’re starting to evaluate production trackers and are wondering what is being used in 3D studios.

Why did your studio pick that one over the others?

We heard of Shotgun, it looks quite amazing but what else is out there that rivals it? Don’t tell me Excel. ;)

Thanks

MAC

we're starting up with Shotgun in the new year. Our VFX department heads have been using it at their old studios and they swear by it for tracking the minutiae of every aspect of production. I don't know much about it myself, but am excited to get going and lock our processes down.

What exactly are you looking for?  Just tracking status of shots (asset tracking) or are you needing to synchronize with the file system (asset management)?

We're heavily invested in Shotgun and I can't recommend it enough. You
do need some sane smart administrators to keep things in check
otherwise its extreme flexibility can quickly become a problem if too
many people are let loose customizing it.

We use it for production tracking, dailies (integrated to RV),
deliveries automation (custom), artists time tracking (down to the
paycheck and accounting department) and are starting to build in some
asset tracking.

Shotgun Software has a GitHub where they store open source projects
that gravitate around Shotgun which includes what they call an event
handler which is a god send for automation.

Shure as heck beats Excel and FileMaker hands down! ;)

For transparency's sake maybe I should mention that I wrote the
initial implementation of the shotgunEventHandler while at Rodeo and
Oblique (subsequently give to Shotgun Software to open source). If
that makes my opinion of Shotgun matter a bit less, so be it, your
loss. ;)

We used Shotgun at Sixbirds, and automated alot of the automatic processes
around it with the provided Python API. We connected our asset management
system to it, implemented the first version of RVGun (a shotgun
integration for
RV)...

Shotgun is great. I second Patrick's opinion though, you will need well
organized
adminitrators for it.

We've been using Shotgun here a while too, tightly integrated with out
asset management.
It does the job well!
