Unchecking the 'Use Python Installed With Softimage' option has no effect: XSI still runs its own

I have a situation where several of our machines refuse to use the system Python (2.7.3 64-bit). I uncheck the 'Use Python installed with Softimage' option, but after restarting, Softimage insists on using its own Python (2.6.4). Runonce.bat seems to have to effect.

Of course, the machine I use is fine, so testing this is a pain...

Any insight into why Soft would refuse to use the system Python (which again is 2.7.3 64-bit, site-wide). It's jacking up our PyQt experience.

Is the preference still turned off after you restart Softimage?
What's the environment look like? (open a Softimage command prompt and run set, or use Process Explorer on XSI.exe)

Yes, the preference is still off after restarting.

But I think I have a good lead on the problem though: late in the day yesterday I found that the problematic machines don't have pywin installed! Kaching! I'll be the first to admit I need a tutorial or something explaining the relationship between Python, pywin, and Softimage. Installing pywin locally fixes the problem and Softimage correctly uses the system Python.

Now here's my next question: do I really have to install pywin locally on each machine, or can I not install it in our network's site-packages?

Pywin = ActiveX scripting support for Python inside Softimage

I don't know about putting pywin in the network site-packages, I never tried...

Ok thanks. We'll continue experimenting here. If anyone else has experience dealing with pywin on a network, feel free to contribute. I mean sure, we can install it locally if we have to, but that presents maintenance issues.
