Hey everyone

Been trying to debug some licensing issues and have come across a head scratcher.

Since MS has a few game teams there are a few license servers floating around. For trouble shooting I was bouncing back and forth with my owner server and a different group trying to make sense of how this stuff works. Thats when I noticed that depending on which server I was trying to check a license out from would have a massive difference on how fast the software would start.

So far I have not noticed any differences between the servers. I edit the ADSKFLEX_LICENSE_FILE registry in Win7 to point to our server and things take forever to start. When I change ADSKFLEX_LICENSE_FILE to point to someone else’s server its massively faster to start software. And it doesn’t matter the software either…Soft, Mudbox, MotionBuilder. They all start really fast pointing to one server and then start really slow when pointing to my server.

Is there anything that would cause one server to be faster/slower? Anything with LM tools? Ports? Anything?

Cant explain these differences. Anyone come across this before.

Hi Marc

I'm not aware of anything about the license server itself that would cause a slowdown.
Typically, when I see a slowdown it is because the client software is trying to connect to multiple different license servers . That's not the case for you.

I'd be tempted to use a packet sniffer like WireShark to see if something obvious jumps out at me.
I'm no expert with WireShark, I've just started using it recently and I'm still learning...

OK, I will poke around.

Its also strange that I cannot use the server name with my server. I am forced to use IP…yet when I point to the other server not only is it way faster but it doesn’t require an IP I can just use the name.

Bah. This stuff is maddening!

And why are there 3 places that licensing info lives? Setenv.bat, LICPATH.LIC and ADSKFLEX_LICENSE_FILE.

Sheesh!

Sounds like an issue on your network, but I'm no network expert.
Maybe it is a name resolution problem?

Is everything IPv6, or all IPv4?

RE: 3 places

You could use just one of them (eg just setenv.bat or just ADSKFLEX_LICENSE_FILE).
It provides a certain amount of flexibility, but it can be a hassle when you need to switch license servers.
In my case, I often have a hard time breaking my licensing when I need to test what happens when xsi doesn't get a license.

If the server is local you have to use 127.0.0.1 as the adress.
Win 7 and also I believe Vista uses IPv6 as loop-back adress.
So "localhost" and "computername" will point at an IPv6 adress.
I had a real struggle with this, before I figured it out, when I was setting up an inhouse wiki last week.

You did give me an idea though Jens

The Fast server does not have IPv6 and my server has IPv6 and IPv4.

Did a little Bing search (sorry I know…have to drink some Kool-Aid don’t I?) and found this

Autodesk Network License Manager IPv6 Support for Windows

http://usa.autodesk.com/adsk/servlet/ps/dl/item?siteID=123112&id=10976858&linkID=9240618

Just updated my LMTools from the link and things appear to be launching MUCH faster. I will do some more testing to confirm.

Wow, that alone I am happen about.

Sweet!

Sorry for the noise, but dang that has been driving me up a wall.

Hehe nice to see it worked out for you :-)
But it makes you think of how many more IPv6 problems we will be hitting in the future when people start switching to it.
