thanks for posting this here, bad news - indeed!
I'm currently in the planning process to go to the Siggraph.
But without Softimage sessions and events it will make less sense
for me to be there. I have to reconsider...
What is about the SI MasterClass, UserGroup and Workshop at the fmx?

Schoennagelpresenting
Hi -
I just spoke with the Training Manager, who had the sad news of
announcing recently that there will be no master classes this year. The
letter I included below was posted on The Area.
The silver lining is most of the presenters that were scheduled have
agreed to record their material for the Area, so we will be able to
populate the community with some good content later on this summer.
As for parties, I don't think there will be very many at all this year.
Actually, last year I had already started thinking along the lines of
scaling back the party idea and working on something more charity
focused for New Orleans, which we are still exploring at Autodesk.
I would encourage anyone going to organize a get together, similar to
the way xsibase used to.
There will be demos and a booth and a good presence for all the
products, but it's a very different year this year, the recession is
sparing no one. :(

To Our Valued 3D Community:
You may have noticed that information about SIGGRAPH(r) 2009 Autodesk
MasterClasses was recently removed from our community site, the AREA
(the-area.com). The economic downturn has caused us to reevaluate our
physical presence at SIGGRAPH 2009 in New Orleans. While we will still
be participating in the conference, we have cancelled the MasterClasses
that were planned to be held at the conference.
Autodesk remains committed to our 3D community and is anticipating
offering MasterClasses during the SIGGRAPH 2009 timeframe. However, we
intend to expand our reach to a worldwide audience by offering our
MasterClasses online, via the AREA.
Autodesk MasterClasses have offered exciting 3D tricks and tips that
attendees were not able to access anywhere else. Topics have included
effective character setup, modeling, rendering and workflow techniques -
all focused on the unique development needs of the computer graphics
(CG) and design industries. Sessions focused on specific skill sets, so
that participants walked away with expert knowledge they could put to
use right away.
For SIGGRAPH 2009, our plan is to offer these same types of classes via
recorded sessions that will be accompanied by notes and data files -
offering global participants a rich and valuable learning experience.

I'll be there Sat-Tues. If no master classes, still having a party?
That's one thing I appreciate is a place to gather with friends and
make contacts.
