Locked compound snagging network

Hi,
has anyone experienced locked compounds? For example thisnode.xsicompound.lock, just like you might find for an opened scene file?
We have one of these in a workgroup, that is preventing render clients from launching - XSI (7.01) stops awaiting user input - continue, retry etc......
Of course, the lock file can't be deleted.
I wonder how to remove the lock file short of restarting every artist's XSI? Does anyone know of a way track down which machine created or is holding onto the file?
Is the lock file created when a workgroup is being loaded? Perhaps a dodgy startup is responsible?

Any ideas appreciated.
