It's been a long time since I've posted anything to this list, but the sentiment of missing XSI reminded me of again why I really dislike Autodesk immensely.

So Newtek was bought up and they ended the development of Lightwave, but they didn't really kill it or try to hold the intellectual property hostage.  They let a small group acquire the rights and continue working on it.  I guess it's the old Amiga owner in me that likes the idea of a small group continuing to develop and maintain something that has a loyal following rather than acquiring and hoarding IP.  I never could imagine Autodesk doing anything like that with XSI.

But things are changing in the industry in general.  I've been impressed with some of the developments I've seen where you can feed your viewport from any 3D app (in this case it was either Houdini or Unreal) into ComfyUI and it will "render" your viewport based on reference images and prompts.  It's an interesting approach.  I could see it someday replacing the standard way we render images or sequences.  Of course, Autodesk quickly acquired Wonder Studio to be a player in the AI space, but like Mudbox, Match Mover, and Arnold, I imagine they'll bleed it and then move on to the next big thing without really trying to innovate or do anything creative.

Always a great time to be alive :)
But extra great to have some Softimage in the mix

The render region was so quick to work with. There’s one in Houdini but not as handy as XSI’s one. And in Maya it is still lacking.

I have been giving Houdini a spin lately (still use Softimage primarily) and yes it is nice to have the render region for isolated stuff, for previews I still prefer Softimage (with Redshift) as I feel for the version number it ended on (3.x) it gives pretty solid interaction, where Houdini's preview just doesn't always update results.

Yes, redshift is still nice to work with in its latest version for xsi. Arnold does have some issues regarding the render region. Sometimes you have to scrub a frame back and forth to have it update correctly.

Probably because redshift wasn’t bought by AD.
