it's legacy technical issues.  When this list converted over to google groups, it wouldn't send mails to my hotmail account.  I can still send messages to the list from hotmail, which this test email proved, but I cannot receive any.  That forced me to make a burner gmail account just for this list.  that's what avid siman is.

Ideally I want the list to funnel through my mantom email account, but every attempt to subscribe results in an error message claiming my email account is disabled (which it clearly isn't as I use it daily with other services).  However, given the reduction in participation of the list as a whole, it's probably a moot point.
