Hey Stephen! I think you might be the only one who can answer the question I have in my head every time I open Softimage: who designed the GUI style? I mean solely the visual part of the UI.

Charles Migos designed the XSI user interface look.

When XSI was still known by it's code name "Sumatra", it was part of Softimage Digital Studio (aka Avid|DS) under the edict to integrate 3D as part of a complete end-to-end production workflow.  However, many failed attempts proved XSI's needs were very different than Digital Studios's needs requiring it be spun off into it's own core which could be independently developed and iterated.  XSI inherited the Digital Studio user interface, and Charles tweaked it to be less soft and pillowy and more crisp as you see it today.  Migos left Softimage around the time XSI made it's debut, or possibly earlier.

Other people can answer it too.

There was an article published on www.softimage.com back in the day crediting Charles Migos as the designer.  I think he left Softimage before XSI hit the market, but the style has persisted.  The look was originally based on the Softimage Digital Studio (Avid|DS) user interface, but modified to be less of a pillow button appearance to what you see today.  XSI was originally supposed to be a component of Digital Studio, but when that effort proved futile, XSI was split off into it's own application and modified as needed, including refining the user interface.

Thanks! After googling for Softimage Digital Studio i can see the UI definitely went in a right direction. Kudos to Charles Migos. I also found out he's responsible for original XSI logo, which i had on my custom-printed t-shit long time ago :)
