Do I need to encrypt the whole message struct or just the data?
If so, should I encrypt each part separately or treat it as a whole?

My recent studies of WAN security would tell me that you only need to
encrypt the data, but I'm not the final authority on that. I would
also say that you should encrypt it as a whole.
