Subject: toaster development some links to similar work at Trisquel
To: gran...@gmail.com
Hi:
Thought I would send you these links in case you have not run across
them already....
Trisquel-sugar 3.0 RC had an activity : usb_creator-1.xo which created
USB sticks from an application in sugar.
links:
http://devel.trisquel.info/sugar/
http://wiki.sugarlabs.org/go/Category:Liveusb
I am attaching a copy of the activity which I downloaded in October
from the Trisquel site.
also a #sugar IRC discussion with quidam about it.
Cordially;

.<quidam> yay! the new trisquel+sugar iso is done :)
<quidam> satellit: I've just downloaded it, the usb-creator works now
<satellit> quidam: same url?
<quidam> satellit: http://devel.trisquel.info/trisquel-sugar_3.0RC_i686.iso
<quidam> I've moved it to the RC
<satellit> will do DL in a minute...: )
<quidam> satellit: it has a lot of activities to test now!
<quidam> :)
<satellit_> k
<satellit_> DL underway
-----------------------------------
<quidam> satellit_: the live-usb.sh script uses grub, but the
usb-creator app uses syslinux, so it should behave alsmost like a live
cd
<satellit_> ok
---------------------------------------
<satellit_> quidam: OK if used on same PC as usb-creator ( I HAVE
PERSITENCE) was made /dev/sda /dev/sda will try another PC now..
----------------------------------------
<satellit_> quidam: I works w/ persistence on EeePC900 wirelessly
<satellit_> congratulations : )
<satellit_> EeePC900 has 2 ssd hard disks so I am sure it is different
than hp Turion64 laptop w/ no HD
<quidam> satellit_: cool
<quidam> satellit_: it also works well in my aspire one, thinkpad x61 and macpro
<quidam> satellit_: I'm just installing it in the aspire
<satellit_> : ) next is an application for making persistent USB/SD
copies to DL from sugarlabs activities
<quidam> satellit_: we are working with a local school here in spain,
they have 400 netbooks using trisquel
<satellit_> wow
<quidam> satellit_: they are going to swith to this release soon
<quidam> satellit_: they are using gnome by now
<quidam> satellit_: but this is way better! :D
<satellit_> how did you get macpro to work? Caroline should know....
<quidam> satellit_: it is a desktop macpro, not a macbook pro
<satellit_> is there a difference in configuration I have a G4 (Last
model) which I KNOW will not work...
<quidam> satellit_: I don't remember well what I did then, it has
three years now
<quidam> satellit_: the g4 and this thing are very different
<satellit_> I know...
<quidam> satellit_: mine is a dual xeon, I recall installing refit
<quidam> satellit_: and maybe bootcamp, but not sure why
<satellit_> runs OSX? natively?
<quidam> it runs trisquel
<satellit_> caroline is facing boot problems w/ macbooks at her school
demo with walter....any ideas would be appreciated I am
sure..Congratulations again!
<quidam> but osx is installed, as a bios updater :)
<satellit_> so usb may not be suitable on it...
<quidam> no, but there is a nice feature in the live system
<quidam> you can use the cd to load the kernel, and it will still use
the usb drive if is connected
<quidam> you cannot use it for booting though
<satellit_> could you write it up for wiki? when you have time?
<quidam> satellit_: sure
translation, please?
i.e. what does it all mean?
I've been thinking of you 'on the road.' We are having rain here, perhaps
you are in more arid country.
We look forward to your safe return.

Well, let's see. This was an email from Thomas letting me (now us)
know of alternative projects with related, functional code intended to
solve some of the same problems as the toaster software - to create
both CDs and USB sticks. Included were some links to these efforts
and an IRC log file of a discussion held in the #sugar channel of the
http://www.freenode.net IRC network. Some of the IRC log is unrelated
to us as it's talking about booting Macs with their custom version of
sugar they use in Spain, this trisquel.info effort.
Despite a couple of personal efforts over the holidays I haven't made
my way back to hacking on the python code or of testing it on any
machines to install. There are some significant issues in the way of
making the creation of USB sticks and CDs very easy for end users.
Some dependencies are on which version of Sugar, which version of
Fedora, and which hardware is used. This may be why no good solution
has evolved previously.
However if a simple shell script with a single binary dependency
(wodim) can turn my xo-1 hardware into an almost functional kiosk with
a USB external burner then it should be somewhat easy to provide some
significant functionality via a simple UI. I am hoping toaster will
be compatible with previous versions of sugar though it will take some
time to test and develop the exceptions into the python code. In
reality the initial target platform will have to be chosen - such as
my xo-1 with clean sugar installs.

P.S. The new admin policies recently prevented a spammer from
subscribing and sending to the list - thanks for the suggestions.
