In the past I had the software running, but am now getting an error
shortly after starting:

stream:error (text)
at org.jivesoftware.smack.PacketReader.parsePackets(PacketReader.java:
306)
at org.jivesoftware.smack.PacketReader.access$000(PacketReader.java:
44)
at org.jivesoftware.smack.PacketReader$1.run(PacketReader.java:76)

running JVM 1.6.0_10 on Ubuntu 8.10 - xOperator-0.2-SNAPSHOT

any suggestions?

Do you have two instances with the same account running on the same machine?

I encountered that error in that condition.
