Hello,
Among colleges within state, PSUs like IOCL, ONGC, NTPC, BRPL, BHEL, EIL, REL, OIL, NRL also recruit from NIT Silchar apart from AEC and JEC. Though I think EIL, BHEL, NTPC, REL doesn't visit AEC/JEC (I may be wrong with a few of them). You can sit for the companies if you are preferably within upper quartile of your class and they have a huge preference for students with higher Pointers (Percentages). For on-campus placements, they usually DON'T hold written examination and go by your academic performance and personal/technical interview. For off-campus placements, you will have much stiffer competition with several thousand applicants for dozen posts. Most of them will ask for a valid GATE score nowadays (NTPC and IOCL is asking this time)
In contrast to that, private companies have a much broader selection procedure with written examination, group discussions, personal and technical interview. Though your question leans towards PSUs, I would request you to explore opportunities worldwide too. As one counsellor pointed out, PSUs jobs, atleast in the initial years, is not a babu job and you will be expected to work hours comparable to any private company. If you are going by the pay packet alone, that is a wrong way to approach your career. I would like to share a personal story of two hostel and Assamese seniors of mine whose anecdote might give you a certain perspective on this Issue.
One senior, Mr. A, joined ONGC through campus-interview in 2008 while another senior Mr. I joined TELCON (I highly reputed private company that recruits Mechanical Engineers with total emoluments equivalent to PSUs). Three weeks back, Mr. A quit ONGC citing strenous work profile, lack of career prospects and very less job-satisfaction (His exact words). While the senior in TELCON has risen thorugh the ranks and is getting equivalent salary, emoluments and a very conducive life (He is based in Kolkatta). Currently, Mr. A is looking for greener pastures. This is
NOT to say that ONGC is a bad company since quite a lot of my seniors are very happy working there and plan to work there for the forseeable future. But the point is, you must consider your situation first before you decide where you want to work and what kind of job profile is suitable for you. There are hundreds of national and international companies out there which might be more suitable for you and if you force yourself into a situation that you know you can't be comfortable with, you risk disatisfaction and disillusionment at a later stage of life. You are the best judge of yourself.
While students from other parts of country (specially from South) are not afraid to explore the world, we urgently need to expand our horizons. This world is full of opportunities and the name of Assam can only rise if Assamese youth go forward in every possible direction and rise through the ranks. So, get out of your comfort zone, don't limit your imagination and try to make our state shine wherever you are.
Good work will always earn good money. Life is highly non-linear and initial condition sensitive but very often a non-ideal start may lead to any ideal solution.
Good luck !
P.S. Some of my friends from the Traning and Placement Cell of NIT Silchar and seniors helped in framing this reply and I gratefully acknowledge their help. For your benefit, I have already asked them to forward me a comprehensive list of all companies for mechanical engineers in India. If they agree to give me the database, I will forward it to you ASAP. (Public sharing of the database is restricted).
Warm Regards,
Manabendra Saharia
