Dear all,

My submission is for Q. No 5

"I am a writer and blogger apart from being a master’s student in English. Apart from teaching, what career options are open for me?"

Answer: Dear X, your background and skills open up various career opportunities, and having a Master’s in English is a cherry on top. Since you already have some experience as a blogger, one career option can be freelancing, which has become quite common. This empowers you to choose your content and place of work, earn competitive rates, and even moonlight. Apart from teaching, government jobs like Public Relations Officer, Junior Information Officer and Senior Information Officer are also good options. However, you need to prepare well and appear for the exams conducted by state governments. Example: The Assam Public Service Commission (APSC) conducts the recruitment exams for PRO and Information Officers in Assam.

You can also try your hands on corporate jobs like - Content Writing, Copywriting, Strategic Communication, Public Relations, Editing, Proofreading, Ghostwriting, Strategizing Content, Creative Writing, Script Writing, Research, etc. Job options like Technical Writing, SEO Management, and Social Media Management are also in demand these days, especially in the corporate world. Still, one needs to have technical knowledge for the same. I hope I have been able to answer your question. Do get in touch for more details. 'Xomidhan' wishes you the best in all your endeavours!

Regards,
Trishna Das (Associate Editor, BNE)

Dear all,

A possible response for query no. 8 is below.

Best regards,

Kavita Jitani

I have always been good at chess, winning competitions through my school life. Now, I have joined a company as a technical lead, but I wish to teach chess in my free time. Should I approach institutes or opt for online coaching? What do you think works well?

Many thanks for your question. And congratulations for your accomplishments. Chess is fast growing as a recreational indoor sport, though not as much as in Tamil Nadu. Given India’s recent showing in the 45th FIDE Chess Olympiad, there is reason to believe that Chess coaching would be sought by many. Now coming to your question, I understand you may have two questions here: choosing online v/s offline generally, or (b) on scope of online v/s offline mode.

(a)    Both online and offline coaching have their own merits. To be honest, the approach you should choose should be based on the time you can allot, your ability to travel to the coaching institute, your language proficiency(s) and your area of interest (e.g. children of a certain age, beginners, more proficient chess players, or any particular move or play type, etc.), your value proposition or USP. Let me give you a few thinking points – (i) if you can devote only a couple of hours over the weekend, probably a local coaching centre depending upon their timing and yours can work best for you. But say you can devote only an hour everyday at say 9 pm, offline coaching wouldn’t work, because most coaching institutes aren’t open at that time. (ii) Further, if you are the main trainer for online or offline training, you may have to allot time for taking your wards to competitions and training them for these competitions. (iii) In terms of demand side, an online mode is more likely to be preferred by professionals and students beyond a certain age whose basics are clear and are looking to hone their skills further. This also means, that for a ward to come to you for paid classes, you should be ability to show value. So, please think through this on what suits you and the students best.

(b)    During the pandemic, there was an unprecedented interest for online classes, but now that interest has reduced significantly. As said above, the audience for online and offline are typically different. In an online mode, the world will be your oyster but in offline mode, your chance of building a tangible profitable business is higher. Also see around, test your market before taking the plunge. Free courses on chess are available online. What is your USP that people will come to you. For both online and offline mode, please ensure that your service/product has a market fit. The thinking points above can help you to sharpen your analysis. At the end of the day, the scope or what would work better would depend on whether your audience wants to buy what you have to offer. If not, are your ready to work towards achieving a market fit.

(c)     To find a market fit and to build an MVP (minimum viable product), one possible option is gathering a group of students of your preferred category for say a 3-month programme. You can try out a combination of offline and online course content and experiment on what works and what doesn’t. You can keep the programme free for this period. Your own satisfaction and enjoyment is also important. Once you are confident, you can take the plunge for a more committed outing as a chess trainer.

All the best!
