Neat. Is the Sun stuff pretty good? For a virtualization solution, and
whatnot? Any opinions?

Also, I == Bad at names.

Your new, free Sun server has arrived. What name should I give it and
will you be keeping Solaris on it or switching to Linux?

I think it should be called bruce.campbell.   I believe the hardware should be: http://www.sun.com/servers/coolthreads/t5220/specs.xml.

As for virtualization, I have noooooo idea.  We'll have to look into xen again I guess.  Let me know when its up and running, I wanna play :P  I had figured by this point it was never going to happen.  Well sweet.

Ha, I'm liking the Evil Dead reference... simply "ash" or so would work too. Hmm, now I really want to hold that bruce campbell marathon that Bender and I keep trying to plan. Another undead reference was made for "lechuck". But Bruce Campbell is just so... well ten times the man I am. :(

But, yeah, the server is GO! Still wish I knew anything significant about virtualization tech.

Just skimmed but it looks like Xen should work.
Can has account?  I'll putz around tomorrow if I don't have a lot of work to do and see if I can't get xen working.

Hmm

http://unix.derkeiler.com/Mailing-Lists/SunManagers/2009-05/msg00010.html

The server will be running Solaris 10 out of the box... I'd think, and not OpenSolaris.

I wish I knew what these are:
http://www.sun.com/servers/coolthreads/ldoms/index.jsp
Comes across as a slice-hosting tech more than hypervisor solution.

Probably right -- though why not install open solaris (other than just the huge pain in the butt it'll probably be)?

OpenSolaris would probably work... it seems a few benchmarks of the server are using OpenSolaris, so I'm thinking it would be fairly easy to setup:
http://www.sun.com/servers/coolthreads/t5220/performance.xml

OpenSolaris and xVM (Sun's Xen fork) might be a great option. I'll let the email aggregate through the rest of the overlords for review and further suggestion.

And Brian, I'll definitely get you an account as soon as I am able.
I'm hoping tech doesn't try to force our hand in any of the decisions.
Also, that three hour difference must be nice :P

I had been under the impression that Logical Domains were, like
Containers, 'application virtualization', basically sharing the same
kernel.

However, Sun and wikipedia both mention a hypervisor:

Logical Domains offers a powerful and consistent methodology for
creating virtualized server environments across the entire CMT server
range:
Create multiple independent virtual machines quickly and easily using
the hypervisor built into every CMT system.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Logical_Domains

Supported guest operating systems:
Solaris 10 11/06 or later
OpenSolaris 2009.06 release
Ubuntu Linux Server Edition
FreeBSD (under development)[1]
OpenBSD 4.5 or later[2]
Wind River Platform for Network Equipment, Linux Edition (announced
availability: second half of 2007)[3]
[edit]

I'd be happy operating out of a Solaris client OS for now, we can
install, side by side, a VM with linux as a client OS if we feel like
it.

Hmm, oooooook. Not sure what accounts he has created or anything, but
the server indeed seems to accept ssh.

Forwarded:

ash.cs.pitt.edu is now up and running. The only problem is that you
don't get an AFS token
when you log in. This is a known problem with newer versions of both
Solaris and Linux.

After logging in, you'll need to do a 'klog' to get a token.

mebbe we need a sparc emulator on deadreckoning?

yeah, that would be awesome... I should see if I can't build it for sparc on deadreckoning. Especially if we can't use ash right now... might as well try something else.

PS. James is not allowed to run 'make' or 'gmake' on ash. He has been banned. :)
